We love the Ambasciatori. It's on Via Roma, just a couple of blocks from the train station, which is where the airport shuttle drops you off. It's reasonably priced (under €100 when we were there last,) with a helpful staff and a great rooftop terrace/breakfast room.

We stayed at the Ambasciatori on Rick's 11 day tour of Sicily last month and it was very good. Wi-fi was a bit awkward, (had to go outside the room to use it), but breakfast was great (cannoli and wonderful croissants on the buffet for breakfast). The bus from the airport will drop you off at the Palermo terminal, about a 10 minute easy walk from the hotel. Very central location to everything, walked everywhere.

I stayed at the Ambasciatori and had mixed feelings. I had one of the poorer rooms. The only window was off an inner service area and the room was pretty dark. Also, the lock had a skeleton key without notches - like the kind they used on cupboard doors. The rooftop breakfast was excellent, nice views too, and I had a very good dinner there one evening. I liked the location and the staff were great. The elevator was slow, with a half flight of stairs from the lobby and I seem to remember having to climb a flight of stairs to get from the elevator up to the breakfast/dining room.

Chani, you're right about the short flight of stairs up to the terrace. I had forgotten about that; it could be a deal-breaker for someone with mobility issues.

We have twice stayed at the Hotel Politeama. The front door is located literally 20 feet away from where the airport bus stops. It is directly across the street from the Politeama Theatre, so it is convenient to the center of town. The breakfast is outstanding with a wide selection of food. If you stay on a lower floor that faces the street, you may hear some traffic noise during the night. But if you stay in the room in the rear of the building, it is quiet.

On my RS tour we stayed at the Hotel Posta. Near the big main post office and it was perfect location to walk everywhere. I just looked at the website and looks like the rooms are in the $50 range - but that could be seasonal.
Nice hotel, nice breakfast room too.
