Hotels in Palermo, Favorite Sights and Cities in Sicily

My friends and I will be traveling by car down the Amalfi coast to Sicily in October--the first time south of Rome for each of us. Can anyone suggest a hotel in Palermo? Or a hotel or agriturismo nearby? Also do you have any favorite Sicilian (or Southern Italy in general) towns or sights you would be kind enough to recommend?

Grazie!

Hi Evelyn,
On the RS Southern Italy tour, we stayed at Hotel Tonic in Palermo. There was nothing particularly special about this hotel, but I did think it was in a safe and convenient area for sightseeing in Palermo. It was easy walking distance to the Opera House which was a good place to catch the bus to other sights. I'd recommend that you check out Trip Advisor or Lonely Planet and look at hotels in this general vicinity if you are going to be staying in Palermo. My favorite town in Sicily was Taormina. Yes, it is filled with tourists but it is in a beautiful setting. I also loved Matera and Positano in southern Italy.

Evelyn, Laura has some great ideas for you! I will not go to Sicily without 1st consulting, and then taking my Lonely Planet guidebook. Also post your question on the Tripadvisor site....and plase tell us how much time you have avail for your trip. (There are some very knowledgeable people on TA.)

We have been twice, and absolutely love Sicily! Do some reading and plan your trip. We stayed in three Agris in Sicily, and loved each one. One was a RS pic in the Madronie Mtns (Il Vecchio Frantoio...fantastic), one was a Karen Brown recc near Syracusa (Il Limonento, rustic, great hosts!), and one was near Pacheo (Baglio Costa di Mandorla, cheap, with a pool, NE Italy). We also loved staying in the Aeolian Islands on Lipari.......Diana Browns B@B was absolutly fun and central.

Be careful if you plan on staying in Palermo.....the crime at night is a problem in some areas, and driving in Palermo and Catania is NOT for the faint of heart!

Send me a personal message for more info.
