My wife and I are staying in Italy for 6 weeks beginning mid April. After 8 days in Rome, we plan on 4 days in Orvieto. Anyone have any experience with these Hotels?
Hotel Corso, Hotel Vigilo, Hotel Palazzo Piccolomini, Grand Hotel Italia, Hotel Maitani, Hotel Duomo.
I haven't stayed at any of those. I stayed at Valentina's Rooms from Rick's book. They were on a quiet back lane. our room was nice and Valentina was an excellent host. She was helpful with our questions and dinner reservations.
I believe the second hotel on your list is actually "Hotel Virgilio", and if so, I spent two nights there last month, and it was really quite wonderful. This is a small hotel (13 rooms) right on the Piazza del Duomo, my room actually had a view of the front corner of the Duomo. The rooms are modern, comfortable and fully equipped, although quite small. The breakfast was excellent -- abundant, diverse, and delicious. The staff was very nice and very helpful, and I know they were disappointed their hotel was not yet recommended in Rick Steve's book. The rates were very reasonable in my estimation. I paid 60 euros for a single room, with a view. Say ciao to Ilaria and Alessandro for me!
Since the bus from the funicular goes up to this Piazza, it drops you perhaps 50 flat paces from the hotel. The Tourist Information office is also right on that piazza, and of course the magnificent Duomo and the Duomo Museum, among other things. I really, really enjoyed Orvieto -- lots to see and do, in town and nearby; lots of good restaurants, a number of craft and wine shops that seemed a cut above the common tourist stuff; lots of good strolling around, including especially in the evening. Sort of a modern town placed into a medieval village.
Enjoy! Larry

Orvieto has all kinds of accommodations, with great B&B's and good modern facilities. And it's a great place to see and do day trips out of. Civita to the southwest is a trip.
We stayed at Hotel Duomo and it was a nice hotel. We were only there one night but it's right next to the Duomo, so you are centrally located.
frank,
I've stayed at Hotel Corso, and would certainly recommend it. The room was very comfortable and it's in a convenient location between the Duomo and the Funicular.
The Palazzo Piccolomini is a an excellent hotel in a very impressive building as its name suggests. We stayed there three or four years ago and were very comfortable. We were finishing a walking holiday and it was a highlight of our trip. What I can't do is compare it with the others. What I can say is that Orvieto is well worth the four days you are spending there.
I've stayed at Hotel Duomo because the Virgilio was full, both are very good and well-located.
We also stayed at Hotel Corso and liked it. It is close to the funicular and an easy walk to the Duomo. The breakfast (included) was good and the hotel has a rooftop terrace. It is not fancy but the room was quiet with a comfortable king size bed-bathroom ensuite.
I don't know if this will help, but we stayed at Hotel Duomo in 2008 (I know a long time ago now), it was nice then but you know how things change. We have never really been disappointed by Rick Steves guide book suggestions. It was great staying right there in the middle of town. We stayed two nights which seemed to be perfect for that small town. Beautiful views from up there. We would go again some day.
We had a good experience in the Grand Hotel Italia last month.
We have also stayed at the Hotel Corso and would highly recommend it. It is easy to find, has nice rooms, and a friendly staff.
Orvieto rolls up its sidewalks and closes down by 9 p.m. If you are looking for nightlife this is not the location. However, this is a great place to kick back and recoup.
Buon viaggio,
My recommendation is Hotel Duomo. Great hotel, great location and friendly, helpful owners. We've stayed there twice - I remember them opening up the kitchen early to provide breakfast for us as we were up at 6 AM to catch the train back to Rome. Also, the rooms are really nice. Orvieto is a great place to visit (but I'd probably only spend a night or two there - SO many great places to visit in Italy!!).
Have fun.
My wife and I stayed in the Hotel Duomo in May and loved it,great owners and very helpful with recommendations for places to go and restaurants. They also have parking available and hotel is right at the Duomo.
