I am looking for a hotel close to the train station for mid June. I know the neighborhood is not the best and has a lot of homeless. I will only be staying one night and I hope to be able to leave my luggage at the hotel (arriving early from Salerno) while I go to Pompeii. Otherwise I will use the left luggage at the train station. RS lists 3 hotels (Europa, Esedra and Potenza) near the station. Does anyone have any experience at these hotels or any other hotel near the train station?
I recently stayed at Royal Gismonda twice, and Napoli Naïf. Both are close to the station, clean, quiet and comfortable. The hosts at both were very accommodating so leaving your luggage shouldn’t be a problem. As for the homeless, there are a lot less than there used to be.
Rachele, both places look very nice, however for the date I want one only has a triple room available and the other will not take a reservation for only 1 night (When I try for 1 night the response is not available but it shows a room available, including the night I want, for 2, 3, or 4 nights.
I don't have a hotel suggestion for you in that area, but I want to reassure you that I didn't particularly notice homeless people around the train station (or elsewhere in Naples) during a 7-night stay in late February. I'm from a big city myself, so I'm accustomed to seeing some people sleeping on the street and am therefore not as likely as others to be alert to that problem in other cities, but it didn't seem to be a big issue in Naples.
I had seen that in several reviews of hotels in the area as a negative on their stay.
I must say that we did not find Naples to be a terrifying sea of lawlessness. We did not stay near the train station, but we did walk all the way from the Hotel Palazzo Decumani to the station. That was about a mile, and we did not see or experience any crime or fear. (Note; I visit the scary behavioral-sink of New York City twice weekly.)
Pre Covid we stayed at Stelle Hotel for one night before catching the train early the next morning. It’s literally inside the train depot so no need to walk around the neighborhood; out the back door and into the depot. It felt safe and catered to business people. Restaurant was attached.
Bob - Have you looked on Booking.com? You can filter your search to the station area. There are a lot of hotels around there. For various reasons I don’t want to recommend other hotels I have stayed in over the years, but they have all been clean and I never had any problems, traveling solo or not. Read the reviews on Booking.com - you should be able to find something suitable and available. The hardest part is finding a place once you get there!
Booking.com is my favorite site for hotel reviews.
Thank you rachele. I just booked a room at Napoli Naif.
