My friend and I are planning a motorcycle tour around the southernmost parts of Italy and hoping to spend a few days in Matera. Does anyone know firsthand of a centrally located hotel in the historic part of town that would be recommended? Thank you!
John, If you want a unique hotel experience staying in a cave, you might have a look at Hotel Sassi. The hotel is across for the historic old town, and the views (especially at night) are stunning! Have a look at their website for details and prices. Happy travels!
I like B&B Donna Eleanora, it's a few yards from the staircase that takes you to the main street of Matera; from there you have a choice of entrances to the Sassi. This is a small property and gets booked ahead. Breakfast is brought in fresh daily by the owners. There is parking available nearby, but not on the property itself. If you have a chance, try to see the Crypt of Original Sin (Cripta del Peccato Originale) just outside of Matera - you'll need a reservation before you go (the owners of the B&B can help you with that).
I also vote for the Hotel Sassi - it is AMAZING !!!!
We just stayed at Locanda di San Martino in Matera It is a cave hotel. You can drive up to door to luggage. They will tell you where you can park for free nearby. Had Room 12. Great views over Sassi.
