Hotels in Italy

My husband and I are taking our first trip to Italy in May 2014. We are looking for hotel recommendations for Venice, Naples, Pompeii and Positano. We'd like to stay in nice but reasonably priced hotels. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Estella, You might find it helpful to check your local Library or larger book stores in your area to see if they have a copy of the RS Italy Guidebook. There are good quality hotels in various price ranges listed there. It's difficult to know what your criteria are for "reasonably priced" or the comfort level you want, so the Guidebook would be a good way to find the best "fit" for hotels. For visits to Pompeii, staying in Sorrento is generally the best idea. Good luck with your planning!

Easy Bed Hostel in Pompei is a hidden gem.
We spent 3 nights there last August. There is also a hotel next door that is more like a little villa.

Have you checked the guide books by the host of this forum?

I've started trying to take the path of least resistance when traveling. You can book rooms in virtually anyplace in the world on Booking.com. And your credit card is not charged until you arrive. Booking.com has accommodations in every price range. Air BnB is getting very large, with inexpensive rooms often in individuals' homes. Their drawback is that they charge your credit card when the reservation is made. Same with Hotels.com.
Another place to find rooms is TripAdvisor.com. It's also a source of information about restaurants, tourist sights etc. in the area you're going.

Estella, you don't specify what your idea of "reasonably priced" is but we just returned from 3 weeks in Italy and I can recommend a wonderful B&B in Venice; Locanda Orseolo. You need to book in advance but it's a wonderful place that's close to everything (between St. Mark's & Rialto Bridge areas). A wonderful breakfast is included in the rate and we felt the price was very reasonable. Have a great trip.

I also suggest Sorrento as opposed to Pompeii. Close to both Pompeii, and not far from Naples. I don't know your budget and really don't know what we paid, because we had a package deal, but we LOVED the Sorrento Hilton Palace. It's amazingly pretty and the service is great!

Your best best for Venice is definately Pensione Guerrato - great price, nice place, friendly service and excellent location! If that's full Locanda Sturion is close by - it's really nice, but a little on the expensive side. For Naples, my suggestion is Hotel Potenza. That's where we stayed - it was actually the lowest price hotel on our entire trip to Europe. Nothing fancy but clean and friendly service. You step outside of the train station in Naples and the hotel is right there. We used it as a base to explore Pompeii and then end our trip by flying home from Naples. Sorry - I've never stayed in Positano.

I use either Booking.com or Venere.com for hotels. Check the ratings, look at the photos, read the reviews (current to older) you can check the dates of your travel for availability and pricing. With Venere, you can search by area of town....say you want to stay by the train station, or prefer the city center? you can search that way for convenience of travel. We've stayed in a bunch of different hotels in Italy, and only 1 was lousy...
