Hotels in Dorsoduro or Castello areas

We are looking for a nice hotel in the $200 - $300 range (cheaper would be OK, but we realize it is Venice) in the Dorsoduro or Castello areas of Venice preferably not too far from a vaporetto stop (or not too many bridges). We have researched the internet and travel books and was wondering if anyone on this forum had any recommendations based on their experiences. We will be staying 4 nights. Thanks in advance

I highly recommend the hotel American-Dinesen in Dorsoduro, where I stayed last October. Lovely place, friendly, perfect location in Venice. Check it out on TripAdvisor.
Ciao.

Hi Don, It's been 5 years, but we stayed at the Hotel American Dinesen. It was about a 2-3 min walk from the vaporetto stop, near the peggy guggenheim museum. We had a really nice, good size room, but we were a family of 4. We saw a couple of the other rooms and some of them were quite a bit smaller. They also had a good breakfast. You can take a gondola ride from right across the street, which we were able to bargain down a little. I think it was because it was a less trafficked area. We loved the location as well.

I don't know how long you are staying, but they were offering a 30% discount if staying 3 nights (which we were) at the time. I would check TA for their current reviews though.

Happy travels!
Joann

EDIT - Wow - I just posted this & saw someone else made the same rec. Must still be good then!

I used Hotel Tivoli which borders San Polo. It has a lot of stairs. Small, basic clean hotel. Comfortable and good overall location. Modest cost. AC works during the night. Near San Toma boat stop/Frari Church/restaurants.

Hotel American Dineson is a good choice which we might consider next time ourselves. It is on a small side canal and appears to have lots of charm. You might also look at Pensione La Calcina right on the Zattere, facing the Giudecca Canal. They have a rooftop terrace which one can reserve for private use for an hour (at least they did when we stayed there). It is magical at sunset. The downside is that if you have a canal view room ( highly recommended), you will see the cruise ships coming in every morning (unless they are banned from the Giudecca Canal, which Venice keeps trying to do).

As far as Castello, nothing in particular comes to mind, but if you seed something promising I can tell you about the location. Our apartment was in Castello, just east of the Rialto Bridge, and we have walked most of the calle around there.

The Hotel American Dinesen also has a couple of apartments you can rent, in a building just next door from the main hotel.
This is where some friends and I stayed, and it was extremely nice.

Grazie for all your responses. It looks like we will be going with the hotel American-Dinesen mainly for their room views and reviews. It is a bit over our budget, but it will be my 70th and wanted something special in those areas.
