Going to be arriving in Catania in September and would like ideas about a hotel, near the bus station for the evening. Next day we will bus to Ortigia. Suggestions greatly appreciated.

As I recall, the individual-company Catania bus offices (there wasn't an indoor station when I was there in 2015) are not in a particularly attractive part of town. I'd stay over in or near the historic area, which will be not all that far from where you'll need to get your bus. A taxi should be inexpensive (though I don't remember taking a taxi in Catania).
There are reasonably frequent trains from Catania to Siracusa, in addition to the bus option.

Thank you so much. We stayed at the Liberty Hotel (which was fantastic). We did a taxi from airport and then to the bus station. We were there about 4 years ago and took a bus to Siracusa. The bus stop in Siracusa was pretty near the bridge to Ortigia. I will check the trains. We will be arriving in Catania after about 20 hours travel from Santa Fe, so we don't need fancy, just close to nice, local option for dinner.

I don't remember restaurants in the immediate area of the bus offices. Things certainly could have changed in the last four years, but in 2015 it had the air of a sort of deserted area even though it wasn't very far from either the historic center or the train station.

I think we will stay more central and taxi it. That is the area we know, so no worries after a long travel day. Wouldn't mind a bit returning to the Liberty. Thanks you for your input. Happy Travels!!
