Hotels in Campo de Fiori neighborhood or Vatican City area?

Hello Fellow Travelers!
I need suggestions please for neighborhoods to stay in Rome. Two adventurous 40-something ladies traveling to family function at Sigonella; then ditching the family to stay 5 nights in Rome. Husbands are staying in US with the kids. ;-) I chose awesome hotels based on RS and other posters on our trip to Iceland/Germany/Czech/Austria last May. But, this invite is very short notice and Rome was not even on my radar. During our last trip to Europe, we found the best restaurants and shops by just wandering. So, I'd like advice on where to start wandering from. Thanks!

Just north of Campo driver Fiori, in the better area of Piazza Navona, a wonderful hotel, Palazzo Navona, roof top bar with nightly apps. Modern design rooms.

If you look at a map - draw a rough line around Piazza Navona, Campo Dei Fiori, Largo Argentina, and Pantheon. Anything you book in this area more or less puts you in easy walk of so many things. I recommend this area to everyone - particularly anyone with physical issues. If you only see this part of Rome - you will see some of the best sites and have a great trip. The Vatican area is doable - but puts you on the outskirts and you will need to use transportation more. Not as scenic either. Piazza Navona is the most beautiful piazza in Rome.

Update: we are traveling beginning of June. So, many hotels are already booked. Looking to spend at or under 150E per night. Would like a more historical building as opposed to modern decor.

Can't get closer to Campo de' Fiori than this:

Rented a room in 2010, an apartment overlooking the square in March 2017. Good thing about the apartments is that they provide maid service as part of the price.

Enjoy your planning!

you can check booking.com put your filters in (A/C, elevator (lift), how many stairs and what floor, cash euro deposit/or pay in cash euro for discount rate, area, washer/dryer, hotel/apt etc) when you click on map check the areas important to you with the blue circles. another is cross-pollinate.com when you find what you want book it. read all the fine print. it is short notice for high season but you will find something and have a great time. hope you find something. happy travels
aloha

You may need to pay more. June is the most expensive time for hotels. You should book soon. Check out Hotel Smearaldo or Hotel Della Torre Argentina.

we have stayed twice at another convent, but close to Campo di Fiori- Casa Santa Lucia Fillipini booked through monasterystays.com. Quiet, clean and convenient to walking everywhere in Rome and Vatican City. They have an interior courtyard and ask for a room adjacent to the courtyard for the quieter rooms. Have fun!

I stayed in an AirBNB just off the Campo di Fiori last year, and loved it! There are tons of restaurants nearby, and it's quite young and fun if you like that (I'm 41 but I loved it). I don't know much about the hotels in that area, but in terms of location, I thought it was great and close to everything major.

We had a wonderful stay at Albergo Cesari- right in Campo dei Fiori, like less than two minute walk to the Pantheon. Perfectly located, very clean, and they have a wonderful rooftop terrace/bar which was wonderful in the late afternoon for appertivo and late at night to unwind. It’s definitely a busy area, but if you just accept it as being part of what Rome is (just like how parts of NYC can be), it has its own crazy whirlwind charm. We were only in Rome for 4 nights (3.5 full days) and it was a perfect location for us to do everything that we wanted to do (and the gelato shop on the corner was a definite plus too 😁)

You will have sooo much fun!! Been to Rome 5x and love it! On our first visit to Rome we stayed at Hotel Italia off Via Nazionale which was very nice and close to the train station. But on return visits we have stayed near Piazza Navona, Campo Di Fiori or the Pantheon which we now prefer. Stayed 1x at Hotel Smeraldo which is close to Campo Di Fiori, Largo Argentina, Trastevere (where we enjoy dining in the evening) and tram and buses. The rooms were small but nice. Had 2 rooms as our 2 teenage boys were with us. The thing I remember about this place was their A/C--were here in July and they had GREAT air cond. and it was HOT! Have also rented apartments 3x which you might want to consider since you are here for 5 nights. The most recent apartment we rented through www.rome-accomodation.net and it was near the Pantheon. I also booked our transfer to the airport through them as we were flying out of Rome. Have rented 2 other lovely apartments near Piazza N. (still have the rental info, but just not off the top of my head) In one of them our big dining room windows overlooked the small square, Largo Febo, with the beautiful ivy covered Hotel Raphael and Santa Lucia Ristorante where in Eat, Pray , Love movie Julia Roberts ordered in Italian. On a girl's trip with my sisters and niece we had an apt. on Governo Vecchio where there are many nice dining options and it was just steps from the popular Pizzeria Da Baffetto. Last fall we had friends who stayed at Albergo del Senato on Piazza della Rotonda (Pantheon piazza) which they liked and it had a rooftop terrace. No doubt Hotel Raphael would be amazing and has a rooftop terrace but is soooo expensive. Prob pay for 1 night what we would pay for 5 in a nice apt. We were happy to just walk by and admire the lovely ivy growing up the facade. Buon Viaggio!

An Italian colleague of mine says Monti is a really great area - near the Colisseum. I had already booked somewhere near Campo di Fiori based on recommendations on this forum, but I think Monti is a bit more upscale - wide boulevards, quieter streets etc. In hindsight, it’s where I’d want to ‘come home to’ after a long day sight-seeing, for some serenity and a nice dinner and calm walk. And it looked like there was more availability in hotels in Monti. (I ended up booking a ‘suite’ that’s more like an Air BnB with breakfast provided!). If you want more excitement in the evening, Campo di Fiori sounds great. I’m just middle-aged, been there done that, and now need my sleep!

I should add this is our first trip to Rom and I researched EXTENSIVELY (many hours) on Hotels.com for hotels and you’re right - lots of them are booked. I really wanted a place with a rooftop bar. No availability for us - we needed a triple room as we are traveling with our pre-teen kiddo, and there was nothing that was away from a main road and fit the bill.

Instead I found there were lots of funny little B&Bs in historic buildings. It seems like many have been turned into almost minimal-facility ‘hotels’. There might not even be a communal area to have breakfast.

My best advice is to decide what YOUR group wants most from your night’s stay: peace & quiet? A place to gather over a drink in the evening? Buzzing nightlife? And then try to figure out how to filter on the qualities you want/don’t want (e.g. stay away from hotels on a major road if you want night-time quiet). You soon learn how to scan reviews very quickly for the right or ‘wrong’ phrases!

Good luck and enjoy!

The Monti neighborhood would be a lovely area to stay too--located between Via Cavour and Via Nazionale and not far from Coliseum. Elizabeth Minchilli, an American married to an Italian, lives in the Monti neighborhood in Rome. She is fun to follow on Instagram and will post pics of Monti. She has a great website with lots of Rome info and also does food tours of Rome. She has Eating Italy apps for your phone for various Italian Cities and a number of books too including "Eating Rome." Her website has lots of info on where to eat in Rome. http://www.elizabethminchilli.com/cooking-workshops/

Have a great trip!
