I will be in Florence late June and I'm having no luck booking a moderately priced hotel not too far from the train station. I've taken suggestions from Rick's book but all of the hotels I've tried are booked. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
have you tried apartments or airbnb?

The center of Florence is very compact and easy to get around on foot, so don't feel that you need to be right next to the train station.
Try http://www.acaciafirenze.com/en. If you are staying more than a night or two Diana should be able to help you. No need to be near train station. Nothing is that far in Florence.
I like Hotel Bigallo, around the corner from the Bsptistery, or Hotel Paris, about 5 minutes' walk from the train station.
My information is very, very OLD. It appears that both of the hotels I've stayed in, "superior tourist class" (i.e. three stars) have been renovated since I was there. But I liked that all the rooms were different from each other. Alas, I doubt that the new bathrooms still have a shower-protective cover on the toilet paper roll (because the shower "was" half of the bathroom - an old Italian construction.) The Byron (near the train station) and the Porta Rossa (better, midtown location but still walkable from the station.) I'd check a place liike TripAdvisor for current reviews-the quantity of reviews is so large that you can usually find a few you trust. Because we had a rear room at the Byron (before it was all air-conditioned) we couldn't tell the building faced the train station square!
I like hotel Pendini a lot. I don't know your budget. I am staying at Pendini for the second time. It 's an easy walk from train station and is centrally located in Florence. Very clean, friendly staff who are very helpful. Lovely breakfast room - breakfast included. You can easily get all info. on this place online or from a RS book. Type back if you need more info. from me.
We were in Florence a few years ago and loved the B & B that we stayed at. It was centrally located and the staff was so helpful. They helped us get tickets for the Uffizi. We could see the Duomo from our window. Such a charming place. http://www.residenzagiotto.it/en/ This is their site. You can also book through expedia and booking.com.
We stayed at the Hotel Accademia and liked it. Very good location and not too pricey. We have also used vrbo.com to rent a 2 bedroom/2 bath apartment for 4 adults next door to the Medici Chapel for 160 euros/night in May, 2015.
I'm a big fan of Hotel Casci, 10 minutes from the train station, 5 minutes from the Duomo. I've stayed there at least 6 times in the past 14 years, and have been very happy every time (fabulous location, very clean, good A/C, decent wifi, extremely friendly, helpful staff, great breakfast, comfortable rooms & beds for very fair price). Twice in the past 14 years I've stayed at a Rick Steves' recommended hotel (with comparable price & location) when Hotel Casci was full - and found that Casci was just better in value and experience. I'll be back there for 4 nights again this coming June. They may be full, but are worth a try.
