We will be dropping off our rental car at the Catania Airport after 3 weeks in Sicily then flying out of Catania after a 2 night stay. We are looking for a local hotel or bed and breakfast that offers an airport shuttle, if a fee, that is fine from and to the airport. We will be in Catania 2 nights. Also if there is a recommendation for an Mt. Etna tour that you would recommend. We have visited before, but we have not taken a tour of Etna. Thanks so much. Best, Karen Sortino
I did an 18 day trip to Sicily in late March and finished up in Catania and flew out of there. I don't know if many hotels offer shuttle service but the taxi service will be fine. There is a fixed fee from the city to the airport if I remember correctly. Our BnB hostess called a taxi for me and asked that they be at the BnB a half hour later and the taxi arrived punctually. The airport is about a ten minute drive from the downtown. There is also a public bus service from Piazza Borsellino right near the catedrale that goes to the airport. I visited Etna on a previous trip to Catania but went with friends who lived in the area so I cannot offer any guidance on an Etna tour. I liked the BnB I stayed at in Catania on this trip very much. It is only about two short blocks from the cathedral and main piazza and fish market and Via Etnea. We were able to walk everywhere, even to the WWII museum and to the bus station to catch a bus on a daytrip to Taormina. It is on the fourth floor of an old building but there is an elevator. My room was very big and had a small outdoor terrace overlooking the waterfront. Breakfast was included (it was good) and there is a big outdoor terrace with direct views of Mt. Etna. The woman who runs the place is very friendly. I would stay there again. Price was very budget friendly and owner responded promptly to my inquiries, My cousin and her husband had a triple room that was also large. Take a look at B&B San Placido Inn if you are still searching for a place to stay.
Great information! Thank you so much. We are just thinking of doing some changes to our itinerary for a month in Sicily in September. Instead of finishing up in Ortigia which we have been many times and loved. Thought we would drive to Sortino where my husband's family resided and finish up with 2 days in Catania instead. I will definitely check out the B&B you suggested. Thanks
I do not know of any hotels that offer airport shuttles and, as said, above, you would not need one, as it is simple to find a taxi outside the terminal.
I'm not aware of any fixed price to the city from the airport, but I do know that the price should be about 30 euro.
I paid that on a trip from the airport to the city center. The next time I took the same trip, from the airport to the same hotel (I stayed in the city for the first night after arrival in the city, and a few weeks later, after dropping off my rental car before another night in Catania, prior to a stay on Salina) the driver wanted to charge me 45 euro or so, but I declined, letting him know I had paid 30 a few weeks prior. He took the 30 with a smile.....
I've been in Catania several times in the past few years, as I've been using it as my entry point to Sicily from the US, and often as a stopover midway in the trip, or at the end, before flying back to US. I think it's a really great city to visit, such friendly people, and so easy to walk around much of the center neighborhoods....
I've found a hotel that I like a lot, just a few steps from the Duomo, which would be a good area to consider when you do your hotel/apt search....
I've always visited Etna from Taormina, so I'm not familiar with any tours, but I'd begin by asking my hotel to recommend a driver, if that's what you are interested in....
Thank you. Do you recall the name of the hotel? Much appreciated.
