We have a day in travel from Venice to Torino and have never stopped in our travels before to Milan.
In reading an older RS book it says the area around the station is not too safe.
We would like to leave our luggage at a hotel then take the Metro into Milan for the day.
Any suggestions on the area and hotels would be appreciated.
There's a Hilton within walking distance, about 10 minutes from the station-if you're an honors member I'm sure they'd do it for free.
There is a Marriott property called Moxy, a funky kinda hotel but across from the terminal. I’ve stayed a couple of times before catching EasyJet. The Milan Malpensa Express should be nearby as well.
Hotel Berna is often recommended here. See this for example: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/italy-reviews/hotel-davanzati-florence-hotel-berna-milan
I haven't stayed there myself.
I just left the Four Points Sheraton yesterday. It's nice and like 3-4 blocks from Milano Centrale. The beds are comfortable and it's clean - also the trofie pasta with pesto was particularly delicious
The area is plenty safe during the day and evening. How is it at 2am? No idea
Another vote for Hotel Berna. Very walkable to and from the train station. Also, metro stop to Duomo is close by.
We stayed there for the 2nd time last month; traveling from Rome…and later departing to Varenna.
One of our best restaurant meals in Italy was within walking distance of the hotel.
We stayed three nights at the Spice Hotel which is about a block from the Centrale station. We never felt unsafe but we never out past 10 pm. On Saturday, there was a nice farmers market nearby.
Opted for Hotel Berna when we were there. It's a little older and so it is a little cheaper and they work harder on service. Their hotel breakfast s was the most expansive one I saw any where we travelled.
The hotels near the train station tend to be business hotels so their prices are subject to conventions and other business events.
The large area outside the station is populated with some people who look like they have nothing better to do but the police presence is pretty high because of the station and metro and I never felt unsafe there. The corridor from the business hotels to the station certainly didn't seem like anything but business people hurrying around. Maybe the areas to the other sides of the station are sketchier or maybe it's gotten better.

Hotel Berna was great.
We have never felt unsafe there. Mind yourselves and your possessions, as you would anywhere, and that goes for the Duomo area and the Metro as well. There are pickpockets everywhere.
The Berna is the only place we will stay in Milan. Business trips caused me to stay at a couple of other places, but for personal travel, the Berna is our go-to and we are there almost annually.
We enjoyed a 1-night stay at Best Western Hotel Madison some years ago. We wanted to be close to Centrale for transport to Malpensa for a morning flight. I see that it's still getting decent reviews on booking.com.
We were in Milan Sept 14-17. While there may be "pickpockets everywhere", we saw another group everywhere - police. The Duomo square was crowded, but no one was pulling the "ketchup trick" or anything. The rail station was also very crowded, but again many police, and no sign of anyone pulling any tricks.
Thank you all for your input. Have not made a full decision to make this stop but the Berna hotel seems to be a favorite. I will look
into the other suggestions as well.
I stayed earlier this week at Hotel Foren. It is across the street from the station. The room was small but comfortable, the staff were very friendly, and they were happy to store my luggage on my departure day. There is a metro stop a block away.
As for safety at night, I closed the wine bar at the market attached to train station (excellent food hall with wine and beer venues among other things) with a Canadian couple I met and we made it home somewhat worse for wear but completely safe quite late at night.
MommaRosa a short walk from Hotel Berna - is this the one Carol?
Great meal on the way out (sadly) of Italy this spring.
John, the restaurant we ate at was Antica Osteria Cavellini. Sounds like we should have eaten at MammaRosa?
