Absolutely stay in Rome! You will need euros for cabs or public transportation.

Donna - DO STAY IN TOWN! The train out to the airport hotels takes 30+ minutes ... and that's not counting the time waiting for it!

Rome is a wonderful city to walk at night. Currently there is an ongoing festival nightly at Castel Sant'Angelo and another on the bank of the Tiber near Trastevere. Live music, shopping, movies, kids stuff - Yes, you need to stay in town or you will miss out on the Roman experience!

My wife and I were in Testacio last night and had a wonderful dinner. No, airport hotels are for layover and early departures!!! Stay in town!!

Ciao,
Ron

Donna - stay in the historic center of Rome if your budget allows it. And that's not near the Termini train station which we found to be less expensive but too urban. The historic center is just a beautiful setting and it is perfectly located for walking to or taking the bus to all the sights. The airport is 30 minutes away by train. So that really limits your ability to come and go from your accomodations easily, especially for those "do as the Roman's" afternoon naps which will recharge you for a wonderful evening in one of the world's most lyrical cities.

You must use local currency -- Euro. You will be ripped off if you use US dollars. Don't even think about. Reverse it. What would you do with Euro in Springdale?
