hotels

My girlfriends and I are in our 50's. We are in relatively good shape, but are concerned that the hotels on this tour will be too rustic to get a good night's sleep. Any thoughts?

And it might also help to explain your concern about rustic and a good night sleep. Afraid the cows might keep you awake?

Phew! Tough crowd. I am looking at the Heart of Italy 9 day tour (Rome, Florence,Cinque Terre) this fall. Some older posts say hotels are old ricketey. I am all for charm, just want to make sure that doesn't translate into discomfort.

I haven't been on this RS tour, but last summer was on one that stopped in Rome and the CT. Rick uses really nice hotels. Rick's hotels are centrally located and usually family run. On my tour they all had air conditioning, comfortable beds, nice breakfast buffets and had great showers with lots and lots of hot water. Rick in his early days of was famous for liking to get Americans out of their comfort zones with more rustic sleeping choices. But he knows who his clients are now and rustic is never a word you could use to describe his hotel choices. They will be far better than you are expecting. I just got my hotel list for this year's tour and looked at each of their web sites. They are all really nice looking with lots of European charm. And they all list that they have free wi fi which will be nice as I am taking my laptop to stay in touch with home.
Worry about something else...the hotels will not be a problem on a RS tour. IMO. Robert

That is really great to hear. Everything else about his tour sounds exactly what we are looking for. I am sure we will enjoy it.

Cherryl, I've been on five RS tours so far, and have a sixth booked later this year. I've noticed in the last few years that the tours have been using more "upscale" hotels, all with ensuite and usually A/C and other "amenities". As a previous reply indicated, the practice used to be to stay in more "budget" accommodations, so a shared washroom down the hall wasn't uncommon. However, that doesn't seem to be the case now (although that still could happen on rare occasions). On that particular tour, you're more likely to get very comfortable accommodations. You might find it helpful to have a look at the "Tour Review" pages, to see what comments others had about that tour. I'd suggest booking soon, as about half of the tours are now shown as "Waitlist Only" and others as "Filling Fast". When "this fall" were you thinking of going? Happy travels!
