Does anyone have a recommendations for a clean inexpensive hotel withing walking distance of the SMN station. Only there for the one night, unfortunately.
The really close hotels are a couple of high-prestige grand hotels. However, we have stayed at the Hotel Basilea which is about 4 blocks away. It's in the RS book. Very reasonable. It's not the closest to the great sites but it worked for us. ATMs and a laundromat nearby. There may be some closer to il Duomo which is about 5 blocks from SMN.
First of all, it would be more helpful if you would define "inexpensive" in terms of dollars or euro. For the last few visits to Florence we have stayed at Mario's Hotel on Via Faenza a few streets over from the SMN station. Four of us stayed at the Lorena (March 29, 2012), as mentioned in Rick Steves' book in Italy. A room for 4 with private bath was 90 euro cheap when split 4 ways. The Lorena is somewhat hostel-like, but was very clean, comfortable and close to everything. Probably about 4 blocks from the train station. Like you, we only had one night in Firenze. We got there around 1 p.m. and left very early the next morning. We had plenty of time for shopping, a carriage ride, sightseeing and dinner.
We are fond of Hotel Dali behind the Duomo. Lovely owners, very clean, I believe a double room goes for 80 euros. It's about a ten to twelve minute walk from SMN.
Check out the Hotel delle telle, which is less than 10 minutes from the train station and around 120E. Both Charlie and Paulo speak excellent English. They are in TripAdvisor.
