Hotel Vecchia Milano? Hotel Garda?

Has anyone stayed at the Hotel Vecchia Milano? It's in Rick's book, and looks more interesting than some of the business class hotels. It's also more affordable for our dates next July; it's €81 per night; the Berna, highly recommended on this forum, is €141. Of the ones I've checked, the Garda, near the train station, is €65 or so. Has anyone stayed there?

The nicer hotels that have been recommended here seem not to be available our dates - Gran Duca di York, for example. Any other suggestions?

I stay at Hotel Garda frequently. It's very nice, they have done restoration in the last few years.

Here is another vote for Hotel Garda. I have stayed in the Berna and the Garda and they are right across the street from each other.

The Garda has a better price.

The location is excellent for all public transportation.

Jane,

I found the rooms at Hotel Garda to be very modern and comfortable, so would definitely recommend that. I had planned to try Hotel Berna this year, but had to unexpectedly change my plans. However based on my research and dealings with the hotel, I would also recommend that.

Thanks, all. I appreciate the input. No comments from anyone about the Vecchia Milano?

My comment on the Vecchia Milano is that I am astonished it still exists. Three of us stayed there in the mid '80s. What it is like now I have no idea. It was a very ordinary, inexpensive hotel on a quiet (more or less) street and I was fascinated by the electronic gate to the garage across the way. It did not swing open but sank into the ground for cars to enter. But I digress ..... the hotel gets dodgy reviews on line so if you choose to stay there, have low expectations.

Looks like it's the Berna. But I'll check out the Garda again.

We always stay at the Hotel Berna and have done so for the last 12 years. The property is outstanding, extremely clean, they have an outstanding staff, and they serve the best breakfast in Milano. It's location is a 5 minute walk to Stazione Centrale and the Metro.

Buon viaggio,

I'm juggling the Berna and Garda. The Berna has that amazing breakfast, but it's about 3 times the price of the Garda, at least on their websites. I haven't emailed the hotels yet to see what they charge if you book direct.

I know the Italians eat a light breakfast, but a cornetto y caffe will not do me. I need a hearty (but not necessarily hot) breakfast. I like a buffet with cheeses, fruit, breads, maybe salumi or plain yogurt.

Of course, we can always have that in our room, and go out for coffee.

Our copy of the 201 7 Italy book should be arriving Monday; I'll wait to see if Rick has added any hotels in my price range.

Thanks for all your suggestions, everyone.

I think Garda offers breakfast for an extra cost. I go to VyTa bar in Milano Centrale, not meat-cheese but many interesting choices and great coffee.

Stayed at hotel Berna and it was very nice with an amazing breakfast buffet and a quick walk from the train station.
