Hotel Sonya Rome

Claims to have the Rick Steves seal of approval. Is this true?

Yep. And if you had the RS Rome book with you, you'd get a 5% discount if you paid in cash.

Cheryl, Yes, it's absolutely true! I was just there a few weeks ago, and there was a RS tour group there at the same time. That tends to confirm the "Seal of Approval". Cheers!

We had a nice large room with a view of the Opera House. Beds were comfy, breakfast was good. If I had to go to Rome again, I would stay there again.

This is what I was hoping to hear. A personal recent experience there. I am having trouble contacting them on their website, so it concerns me, because Email was kicked back. How do you recommend the reservation. P.S. I intend to buy Rick's book on Rome; however, we are booking a cruise 8 months out, and haven't done that yet.
We need accommodations for post-cruise.

Cheryl, We stayed at the Hotel Sonya for the Rome section of our Rick Steves' group Heart of Italy Tour, in 2009. It was a delightful, clean place. The rooms were relatively large, modern-style decor, exceptionally clean, and the bathrooms nice. It was a very quiet place in which to stay, even though it was in still very much in the city. Breakfast was very good, and the hotel staff could not have been nicer, more helpful, etc. And, they have a really cool old elevator (we look lots of photos) and a beautiful staircase, too. An easy walk to the Metro. Seems I recall hearing that some of the upper floors have condos, and possibly the hotel rooms used to be condos, but original floor space was divided in two for hotel rooms. When we entered our room behind a big heavy door, there was an entry foyer area behind that big entry door, then there were separate entry doors for our room and the room next door....sounds odd, I realize, but it was very, very nice and more on the upscale side. Also made it very quiet, so that it was almost impossible to hear anyone in the hallway. The modern style decor of the rooms, mixed with the architectural, historical elements of the lobby, stairs, elevator, common areas, made for a nice mix and delightful combination. Enjoy your cruise, and definitely take some time to see Rome, if you have not been there before (I'd advise a minimum of two full days, if not three). Safe travels.

It is our preferred hotel for Rome (5 trips) because Marcia thinks their lattes are better (extremely small margin) over Aberdeen's lattes. The location is good and very convenient to Termini.

Hi Cheryl, Another thumbs up for the Sonya. Nice rooms, staff was very friendly and helpful and really enjoyed the breakfast too. Also stayed there on RS tour in 2007. Very convenent to Termini train station, Metro, and busses. We felt very safe in this area too. After checking out, we just walked to the train station, bought our tickets and headed to Amalfi. The RS Italy 2012 book just came out. It's on sale this week on this website. The travel tips, most current info on the sites etc. will more than pay for the book. Travel safe! Sherry

Cheryl, Regarding the "issue" you've been experiencing in contacting Hotel Sonya. Based on past reports that I've seen here on the HelpLine, I'm wondering whether there could be a problem with the particular E-mail provider you're using? That may be the reason that the notes are being "kicked back" to you? I had NO problems whatsoever booking my room, using their website. I received a confirmation very quickly. If you're still having trouble with it, it might be an idea to give them a call (keeping the time difference in mind). To clarify some previous comments, there are indeed some private apartments in the same building. Good luck!

Fyi, they put us in their annex about a half block away. It was very nice and the towel warmers worked. They were very good about getting us a minivan for the airport. There is a discount for cash, but you will need exact (or at least close) change. Our bill for 1 night was E150 less 5% for cash. We stayed there at the conclusion of a RS tour since Hotel Aberdeen was full. Maybe 5-10 minute walk to Termini and nice location near Via Nazionale.
