Can anyone recommend a hotel in Catania with reliable transportation to the airport, probably early in the morning? And if we have to stay at the airport itself overnight, are there places to sit and snooze?

I take a taxi to the train station and then the Alibus to the airport. The Alibus makes several stops in Catania, your hotel might be near one of them. I think the ticket for Alibus is €4.

Taxi to the airport was €25 last time I took one (3 years ago, I have taken the Alibus several times this year).
Edit: the cab ride was at 5:30am, I may have paid more for the early hour.

This looks like a very nice hotel right by the train station which has a shuttle service. You should inquire about cost (it's only ~ 3 miles from the airport, not far), I don't think many hotels will have free shuttles.
