Will appreciate your feedback on either of these Rome hotels near Termini, both RS recommended with RS discounts and similar prices for 2 adults. It's only for one night before train travel the next day so maybe doesn't make much difference. Trip Advisor had mixed reviews on both, but more positive than negative. Thanks!
I have only been to the Hotel Selene and enjoyed my stay there. It was on the BOE 14 day tour, Best of Europe and I stayed an extra night. Good breakfast, modern hotel, lovely large room for one person. I would stay there again, but the Hotel Aberdeen is much cheaper. It has a good breakfast too, but more worn and the room is plain and smaller. But it is not far from the Hotel Selene and near the train station as is the Hotel Selene. I would rather stay in the Hotel Abereen as is much cheaper and still a good hotel and the staff was very nice. They were nice at both places. Hotel Selene is much nicer in appearance but a much more expensive hotel. For a one night stay it is up to you.
Selene is my first choice hotel near Termini and it has been so probably before RS even discovered. When they are booked they recommend me to the San Remo nearby. The San Remo is cheaper and I like that too. When I wanted to save money I sometimes would go directly to the San Remo. I rarely stay near Termini nowadays since my cousin moved to Trastevere, but if I needed to be near Termini, those would be my choices depending on my budget. The Selene has gotten a little pricey since I first started using it. Everything RS suggests becomes unaffordable after a few years.
We prefer Sonya over Aberdeen as my wife thinks their lattes are better. If there are, it is a small margin. The Sonya for the location and convenience has been our go to hotel when in Rome for the last four or five visits. BUT - no experience with Selene either. We have also used Contilla for one night stays between trains. Breakfast is very so/so but only a block from Termini out the south door and there is laundry across the street from Contilla which is a big plus when moving through Rome. We would not use Contilla if staying three or four days.
WE stayed at Selene at the end of our Best of Europe My Way Tour. I thought it was a very nice hotel, close to the Termini Station. Other than having too many people in the elevator, we had a very positive experience!
I stayed at both in 2013. The Sonya was where our Heart of Italy stayed but couldn't accommodate us for the days ahead so we stayed at the Selene. To me the Selene rooms we had seemed to have been redone more recently and my single at the Selene which was actually a double room was HUGE compared to my true single at the Sonya which was bed sized. I thought the breakfast had more choices at the Selene but I'm vegan so don't listen to me on that, lol. Both had very nice staff who spoke English, readily gave restaurant recommendations and were in general very helpful. They are within a block or so of each other. I believe at the Selene we had to walk up to the 3rd floor to take the elevator whereas the Sonya had an elevator from the ground floor. They were doing some reno on the entrance at Selene at that time so I may be mistaken. I would stay at either...which is no help for you trying to make a choice!
Stayed at Hotel Selene in 2013. Great location, very nice room, and great breakfast. Unfortunately, tried to book it for a return and they were full. Would stay there again.
As always, RS Forum posters are the BEST!! Thanks all for your very helpful personal experiences. About the stairs to the elevator at Selene, Giovanni answered my email almost instantly - there are only 7 - which I'm sure we can manage. Based on your comments, we will reserve at Selene. Grazie ancora! Susan
Just stayed at Hotel Sonya. It was nice. I had a single room and it was super small (bathroom was larger than the rest of the room). but the view out my window was of the Opera House which was not too bad. Has air conditioning, elevator, decent breakfast and extremely helpful staff. Surrounding area has lots of good eating places and it is not too far from public transit.
Don't know about Selene.
