Hotel Safety

I'll have a dslr camera and camcorder on my trip. Are these items safe to leave in the room if I go out to dinner and want to leave them behind. Ate hotel staffs pretty trustworthy?

Are hotel staffs pretty trustworthy? Yes.
Does that guarantee your stuff won't be stolen? No. If you're worried about your valuables being stolen when you go out, leave them at the front desk.

When I leave my hotel room I put away into my suitcase anything I don't want to lose. Then I lock the suitcase. Chances are a single item would be easier to steal than an entire piece of luggage. Cameras, small computers, etc. also can be locked into a safe in the room if that is available.

For the most part all hotels are safe and you really don't have to worry about leaving things in the room but no one can guarantee that nothing will happen even in the most expensive hotels. We don't hear about it that often so I can only assume that it is a very rare occurrence. You might want to wait until you get to your hotel to determine if you think it's okay or not. Donna

I travel with expensive dslr equipment and I always take camera with me, not so much worried about theft and I am about missing a great shot.

christopher, In my experience, the staff at Hotels are "trustworthy" however I try to minimize opportunities for theft. I also travel with a DSLR and associated kit, and sometimes leave it in the Hotel room if I'm going out for dinner or whatever. I normally keep it out of sight locked inside my Pack and often take out the memory card and store it in my Money Belt. A thief might get the Camera, but at least I'll still have my photos! I also take a small P&S Camera as a "backup" but that's always with me. I leave my Netbook in the room most of the time, again locked inside the luggage. I tend to use Hotels listed in the Guidebooks, and so far I haven't had any problems. Happy travels!
