Hi Mary,
You can check reviews for both the hotels in www.tripadvisor.com . I checked for Hotel Riva (as I am also looking for venice accomodation :)), reviews are nice. However their prices seem a bit over my budget.

i am having trouble finding hotels in my price range too! I wasn't too impressed by Riva but it still is pricey in my opinion.
