Hotel reservations needed in Sicily in early May

We (two couples) will be traveling through Sicily by car. We would prefer to spend not much more than 100 Euro/night/couple. We prefer to not make all hotel reservations in advance to give us some flexibility once there, but would it be hard to find a place a day or two in advance in places like Piazza Amenerina (for Villa Romano), Agrigento, Selinute, Erice? We won't be too picky about where we stay, would prefer charm over lots of modern comfort, but don't want to end up frantically searching for a bed after a hard day of touristing.
Thank you for any advice you can give.

For early May you should be okay, but Erice is a small town, you may end up in Trapani. Piazza Armerina is larger but as I recall has more B&Bs than hotels. Agrigento will not be a problem but you might consider Selinunte a long daytrip instead of an overnight, unless you really love archeology (I do). I suggest you do a little research online just to see the kinds of places that are available (booking.com is great for this), and perhaps check again while you're in Sicily the day before you arrive at a location. Booking.com can email you about last-minute deals, too. Many places have free parking, especially if they are not in the city center.

Diane, you propose an equation impossible to solve (the hotelier sector in the island would be bankrupt if you or a random traveler could find charming, comfortable, affordable, well-located, properly served properties at whim, anywhere) My suggestion is this: 1- go to a hotel reservation site (Booking and Venere are my favorites for Italy, they have tons of coverage of independent properties there), and scoop your preferred properties on places you are going to visit. Make a list of the ones you would consider as good options. 2- among that list of "it would be cool to stay there" properties, choose an initial sequence of bookings that can be easily cancelled without fees and lock yourself into that itinerary 3- then, as you travel, with the flexibility of cancellation, you can always check (first) other of your pre-ed properties and, if they have some short-notice accommodation, cancel the one you had ed in step #2 That way you have certainty (a bed to stay every single day of your trip) while also retaining flexibility (ability to cancel on short notice if you change plans, while already having a portfolio of alternative places you would like to change to if the are available on the last last moment).
