Hotel Reservations Needed?

Four of us are traveling to northern Italy (Venice, Cinque Terra and Lake Como) from Sept 17-30. We have always booked rooms in advance on past trips and we have a reservation for two rooms in Venice. The question is do we really need advance reservations for these other two destinations? Is there a good way to find little gems without advance reservations? Thanks

Thomas, you should read Brad's reply to the thread "Accomodations in Venice", which is bit further on down the page. I like his attitude and travel style, but I am too rigid to travel that way.

Are you driving or taking a train? I am always willing to risk no reservations if I have a car, because I can just drive on to the next location. I have traveled to Lake Como without reservations in May and found a lovely hotel with a balcony overlooking the water and the rate was reasonable. I typically don't make reservations except in the big cities, but again I have a car. I would not feel too comfortable walking around from a train staion lugging a suitcase behind me while I try to search out a room. Did that in Milan and found a lovely place, but it could have turned out badly. I would say you might have trouble in CT. Look on line and try to check out the dates you want to go and if there is nothing available you're in trouble. If there are lots of rooms then you can take a risk.
