I certainly haven't been to lots of hotels in Rome, I stick with the ones I know - so no answers here. However, I use TripAdvisor and the Rick Steves guidebook when selekting hotels. At that very low price I think it unlikely that you will get location, price and 19th century decor.

In 2005 we stayed at Hotel Aberdeen and absolutely loved it. The staff, the rooms, the breakfast were all fantastic. There was nothing wrong with the location but it just wasn't as convenient for us. In 2011 we stayed at Hotel Esmeralda. The location was great, the breakfast was good, the staff were indifferent--most of the time--and the rooms were nice but the atmosphere was ho-hum. The terrace was nice but not great.

I am doing the exact same trip as you....Rome, Venice, Paris, Amsterdam mid August. Same budget too. I am interested to find out where you end up staying. I have been looking on bookit.com and comparing it to travelocity reviews. Be sure to check the actual hotel website for prices. Some were more expensive than on the booking.com site but some were actually less expensive.

Do you have a good guidebook? That's always a good place to start. The RS books are excellent, esp. for your first time in Europe. Happy travels.

I have the DK Eyewitness Travel books for each city. This is my fourth trip to Europe - I was backpacking in my teens and early twenties the first three times - I'm now in my early thirties and won't be backpacking :)

Reserved "Hotel Palazzo Vitturi" in Venice For Paris, I'm leaning toward the following hotels (in order of ascending cost)... -Hotel Caron de Beaumarchais -Aviatic Hotel Saint Germain -Hotel Louvre Sainte Anne
-Hotel Saint Jacques Any thoughts / experiences at those hotels - or other recommendations? Not yet sure about Amsterdam hotels - any insight on which borough to stay in for the best art museum, culture, and canal experiences? Kind Regards
