We will be taking a cruise out of Venice and want to know the best hotels to stay in to make the easiest transfer to the ship.

We have cruised out of Venice twice and are going to do so again next fall. We always stay near the train station and find the short walk across the canal to the Piazza Del Roma (where you can get a taxi to the cruise terminal) an acceptable alternative to staying closer to the piazza and farther away from everything else. It takes a bit getting luggage over there, but it's not that bad with good wheels and it's a wonderful neighborhood to stay in. We always stay at the Hotel Abbazia, a converted monastery that's just great.
Incidentally, if you have never cruised out of Venice, you are in for a treat. The ships go down the Canale Della Giudecca and you see it all from the height of the ship ... it's truly a great experience!
