Hotel Recommendations in Florence & Sorrento

After much thought I have decided to stay at the Hotel Smeraldo in Rome in July and was highly recommended by a friend. Does anyone have suggestions for hotels in Florence & Sorrento? I looked into apartments in Florence but not cheap for family of 4 and most of them were on higher floors which would be a problem to haul luggage in the absence of an elevator.

In Sorrento, I liked Hotel Mignon Meuble. Nice hotel, great location, large roof deck and good breakfast. Rooms are on 2nd and 3rd floors. In Florence, I like Hotel il Bargellino. It's on a quiet street near the train station and has a large terrace where you can relax or have a picnic. Rooms are on the 2nd floor. There was a family of 4 (parents, teenage son and daughter) staying in a room when I was there last May. Il Bargellino doesn't serve breakfast, but each room has a small fridge where you can store breakfast items purchased at one of the nearby stores.

Florence I recommend Bellvue House: http://www.bellevuehouse.it/inglese/bed_and_breakfast_florence_center.asp

Antonio not only gave us a great rate being Rick Steves readers but offered to to reserve our tickets for the Uffizi and Accademia, cutting our wait time in line to next to nothing. Rooms were clean, spacious and close to amazing restaurants such as Trattoria 13 Gobbi. A 10 minute walk from the train station and 2 minutes from a laundry mat.

Hi Ru,

My husband and I stayed at Ulisse Deluxe Hostel (http://www.ulissedeluxe.com/index_english.htm). It is really like a 4star hotel (Rick Steves also recommends this in his Italy book). The prices are very reasonable and the place is very clean. The rooms were huge (with marble floors) and had a TV/Fridge etc. They had a breakfast Buffet that you could pay extra for. And it's in a great location. I would definitely recommend that you look into this.

In Florence we stayed at a very nice B&B called Casa di Barbano (www.casadibarbano.it) for approx 85Eur a night and included a nice breakfast delivered to your room each morning. The owners are so friendly and the place is really clean.

Have a wonderful trip!

I have a reservation in Florence at the place Frank mentioned, Il Bargellino. We don't go until September so I can't give you first hand information, but I have heard nothing but good things. The owner, Carmel, is from Boston. She has been very easy to work with and has offered to make museum reservations for me too. I have to assume that is common practice in Florence. Have a great trip!

In Sorrento, I highly recommend La Tonnarella. It's in Rick's guide. We've stayed there 3 times and absolutely love it. On the cliff overlooking the Bay of Naples (but a very easy and beautiful 5 min walk downhill to town), lots of terraces and flowers, incredibly good restaurant, great breakfast buffet included, private beach, great beds, great bathrooms, incredible views.

We stayed at the Mignon Meuble in Sorrento and liked it. Convenient location, nice breakfast, free computer use, friendly staff. Modest but very clean, our room had a small balcony (looked out into high school classrooms, but a fun perk for 2 retired teachers who no longer had to be there). In Florence we stayed at the Hotel La Venere. Easy walk from train station, elevator, very nice breakfast, complimentary glass of wine in the evening, helpful staff (made our museum reservs, etc). TI a few doors down. Both cost probably near or under 100 euro for 2. Neither is fancy, but I remember the friendliness of people long after the memories of bedspreads or scented soaps fade.

We stayed at the Smeraldo in July 2006 and the best part was their full blast air conditioning. Rooms were nice but quite small. We had 2 rooms for our family of 4 but our 2 boys were old enough to have their own room. It is in a great location too. Rented an apt. in Florence so no help there but stayed at Hotel Settimo Cielo in Sorrento out on Via Capo. Had a balcony with beautiful views of the Bay of Naples and a very nice pool on the roof overlooking the bay. Would stay here again.
