In Assisi I stay at Hotel Sole. It's right in between Santa Chiara and the Piazza Commune. Comfortable family-owned building from several centuries ago! Wonderful food too! Easy walk to everything but also where you want to be in the evening.

I can recommend the Hotel Ideale. It is on the southern fringe of town with its own parking (wonderful if you have a car), is a short walk to everything, has a lovely garden with fantastic views over the city and over the countryside, a small bar for an end of the day glass of wine, and is run by a friendly and efficient family.

Jeri,

I'd also highly recommend Hotel Ideale. The rooms are very comfortable, the staff are wonderful and it's in a great location (close to the bus stop that goes down to the station and also an easy walk into town).

Jeri,
I'll second / third? the above replies about the Hotel Ideale. The location is fantastic. Great views looking both up and down onto the town. Very nice breakfast and the rooms were bright and comfortable. Bus stop from / to the train station, or the lower town is within 1/2 block of the hotel. Don't forget to validate your bus tickets.

It's also a great location to take a break in the middle of the day, with an appropriate adult beverage, when the crowds are down in the lower end of town. Ahhhhh......
Have a great trip,
Gene

We have stayed at St. Anthony Guest house run by English speaking nuns twice in Assissi. We loved it. Nice public rooms including a library. Lovely garden where you can hang clothes to dry. Situated between the Cathedral and Santa Chiara right in the middle of town and an easy stroll downhill to the Basilica of San Francisco. The rooms are bare and functional -- but fine and have private baths (sort of college dorm level) They provide a plastic basin to do some home laundry. Love the place.

We have eaten at a hotel in San Gimignano where friends stayed -- can't remember the name but it was lovely at night since SG is a terrible tourist trap in the daytime. It was lovely in the evening with the tour buses gone and the hotel was smack in the center of the tiny town.

It's been a few years ago, but we stayed at one of Carla Rossi's places in town (see Ponte a Nappo in current RS Italy book - at the end it mentions the in-town apartments).
