Hotel Recommendations for Florence

Hi Everyone - We are planning our October trip to Italy which includes a four night stay in Florence. I am having trouble picking a hotel. We want to stay in the Duomo area and need a private bathroom. A hotel which includes breakfast would be nice. I would appreciate any suggestions/recommendations. Thanks, Penny

You should pick up a copy of the Rick Steves Italy book. It will be the smartest money you spend on your vacation and it's loaded with lodging advice for different neighborhoods in all price ranges. Also it has answers to questions you don't even realize you need to ask. Happy travels.

Ditto Michael. You could get dozens of places to stay from posters on this site. The RS book really helps. You might also look at www.tripadvisor.com

We stayed at Tourist House Ghiberti in June and were very pleased - comfy bed, good air con (not a prob in Oct), good shower and nice breakfast. The owners were very helpful in suggesting and making reservations. Good quiet location near the Duomo.

My son, daughter, and I just stayed in Hotel Europa in Florence about a week ago. Absolutely perfect. I don't know if it's in your price range or not, but I will definitely stay there again. The location is perfectas soon as you step out of the hotel, you can see the Duomojust right down the street. The Accademia is just around the cornermaybe a two minute walk from the hotel. Despite the central location, the room was extremely quiet. Robert and Miriam and daughter are absolutely wonderful hosts, booked us a reservation at the Accademia at the last minute, let us leave our luggage for almost a full day at the hotel after we had checked out, and served a great breakfast with cappuccino. I thought it was a fantastic deal, but check it out on their website.

I would second the earlier suggestion for Hotel dei Macchiaiolli. Wonderful staff, great breakfast, and fantastic location.

In March 2011, we stayed at the Hotel dei Macchiaiolli (www.hoteldeimacchiaioli.com). It was in a great location (near the Accademia, just up the street from the Duomo), was very reasonably priced, clean, quiet, comfortable, served an excellent breakfast, and had a very friendly and very helpful staff. I highly recommend this beautiful hotel, which is located on the second floor of a palace and has several public rooms (including the breakfast room) with frescoed ceilings; it is listed in Rick's Florence and Tuscany book.

Penny: I, too, wanted to stay near the Duomo and settled on Soggiorno Battistero. from my window I looked directly out on the Baptistry. The room had private bath, free Wi-Fi, very reasonable prices, and a large continental breakfast. The best part was the hostess, Kelly, an American. Prior to the trip, she had arranged all my museum reservations. Dealing with someone with whom I could easliy communicate was wonderful. There are a few steps to get up to the hotel level, but I forget all that now when I think about just how pleasant Kelly made my trip to Florence. Here's the info: Soggiorno Battistero Piazza San Giovanni, 1 50129 Firenze, Italia ([email protected])

I like Hotel Casci on via Cavour. It has breakfast, free internet, and a friendly staff.

All of the previous suggestions sound fine. When we are in Florence, and we will be there in October, we stay at the Hotel Scoti. It's an easy walk from the train station as well as a short walk to the Duomo, Piazza della Signoria and the Uffizi. The hotel is an elevator ride up from the street. It has private baths and an internet connection and is immaculately clean. Doreen, the owner, is from Australia and had lived in Florence for years and is pleased to give excellent suggestions. A continental breakfast is delivered to your room for a reasonable 5 euros/person. Here's the web site: www.hotelscoti.com

Hi Everyone -
We appreciate all your thoughtful replies. We decided to stay at the Hotel Axial. Rick's book recommends it and it seemed best for us based on location and price (rate of $115 each night). Finally, we have reservations for all four locations in Italy (Rome, Venice, Florence, and Cortona). I can't wait! I will make sure to post our experiences at the hotels when we get back. Happy traveling.....

We were in Florence earlier this year. We didn't stay here, but met some people who did. They loved it and so we went to see it. It's in a great location and looks like a really interesting place. There is one room with a terrace, with a lovely view.

Penny, I just left Florence two days ago. I am traveling with two friends and we stayed at the Residenza Giotto. Here is the website: www.residenzagiotto.it. It was great! It is right in the middle of the Duomo area, has a private bathroom, is very affordable (we're studying abroad on a budget), and has a great breakfast! The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful with all of our questions. The view from the room was amazing. There was a cute terrace to have breakfast on. Another plus for us was the room had a really good air conditioning system, although this may not be an issue in October. We all agreed that this was our favorite place we stayed in our entire six week trip.
