Traveling to Venice and Rome in June with our three children 12,10 and 6 years old but having trouble finding hotel rooms to accommodate 5. Any suggestions on where to stay or good online search tools that might result in better options close to the cities?
Consider renting an apartment instead. Check airbnb.com and vrbo.com for lots of options. And be sure to find a place IN these cities, not CLOSE to them.
We used apartments in both cities for our family of five. There are many options out there, many in very good locations, and the price is far lower than two hotel rooms. Put simply, you will not find any hotel room in either city for 5. You will need two rooms or an apartment. Both cities have apartments available for less than the week-long norm elsewhere. However, good apartments book up early - as in several months ahead. With each passing day your options narrow for June. An a l t e rnative is a youth hostel. We have happily used these for shorter stays. But with almost any hotel, you are looking at two rooms and that gets spendy in a hurry. there are sometimes odd exceptions to this rule. It never hurts to email the hotel and ask what options are out there for your family. Sometimes hotels also operate mini-apartments for this very purpose, or can connect you with someone else who does. Or they may offer you a small discount on two rooms together.
I had lots of trouble finding hotel rooms for quad occupancy in Rome last June. I used booking.com to do it. Getting a room for 5 will be harder. Agree that an apartment is the best bet. I know many people who've used VRBO and it turned out well.
And check out Pensione Guerrato. They're a Rick Steves fave and they have some apartments that they rent out.
Elizabeth, I have copy and pasted a link to a place on airbnb. The owners of these two apartments owned the place I stayed in Rome two years ago and are amazingly sweet people!! They have two apartments now that they rent that are in the center of Rome. One fits up to four and one fits up to six. If I was going to rent an apartment in Rome, Max & Lavinia are the ONLY people I would ever rent from!! They are honest, sweet amazing people!! Check them out! https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/811973
Elizabeth, we also have 3 children 13, 11, and 10 so this summer we are opting for apartments instead of hotels/other in order to have kitchen and laundry facilities. I used vrbo.com extensively and we are on a tight budget (aim 150-180 euros/night). Check out these options: ROME: Http://www.vrbo.com/305032 Http://www.vrbo.com/320914 VENICE:
