Hubby has a convention at Fiera Milano and I am along for the ride! This trip precedes our RS Sicily adventure. We would like a hotel between the Expo site and Milan that is close to the train station. I will be on my own a bit for sightseeing while he is working so suggestions for safe expeditions for a solo female traveler appreciated.

The Milan metro line A goes to the exhibition center, so I suggest you look for somewhere in Milan, but close to that line. Somewhere around Cadorna station or the Conciliazione stop would be perfect (and walkable to the Duomo), or Lotto a bit further out of town.
Milan is a very safe city where you are unlikely to get into trouble. As an example of excursion out of the city, you could take the train out of Milano Cadorna to Como Nord Lago and explore the city of Como, then enjoy the view from Brunate up the funicular or hop on a short boat ride to Cernobbio to experience a bit of the lake.
