My husband and I are spending our first 3 nights of a 17 day trip to Italy in Rome in October 2011. Lots of posts recommend staying near Termini - which seems logical since we will arrive via train with our luggage - however we don't want to be limited in our hotel choice by this. Since its our first visit - we plan to cover a lot of ground so looking for something that is convenient to sights as well as transportation. Have been looking at Hotel Sonya and Hotel Aberdeen but am open to other suggestions. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
How about an apartment in the historic center? Try http://www.palazzo-olivia.it//. We found Palazzo Olivia to be a 13 euro taxi ride from Termini. When we had to leave early on a Sunday morning, caught a cab back from a taxi stand about a block away. Great area for dining, and 20 minutes to the Colosseum, 25 to the Vatican (walking in each case). Campo dei Fiori and Piazza Navona are both close by. we walked almost everywhere from PO last October. Returning there in December.
Allyson, we have stayed at Hotel Aberdeen and absolutely loved it (2007). The staff, the rooms, the breakfast were all fantastic but this year decided to stay at Hotel Smeraldo because of the location. We have never stayed there before although our adult daughter did in 2008 and found it perfect.
We also stayed at Hotel Aberdeen ,excellent all around. Location, price, air cond. kind staff, xtra clean comfy rooms, we were very pleased and woould stay there again. Do not stay at Termini, that is for those who fly out & w/ only one night in Rome
Take a look at Nicolas Inn near the Coliseum.
check hotel St. Anselmo which is near Testaccio and Piramide. You should check them on trip advisor site...
We have stayed at Sonya three times and Aberdeen once. Aberdeen is excellent but a little further from Termini. We prefer Sonya because my wife thinks their breakfast is slightly better and it is closer to Termini. Either would be a good choice.
I can second the Palazzo Olivia recommendation! It's a fantastic apartment building and the central location just can't be beat. You can read the reviews on TripAdvisor but it's within your budget and we really enjoyed being so central yet having an apartment which gave us more room than a hotel to spread out. There's a taxi stand right around the corner as well as bus stops, a bank/ATM machine, an internet point, cafes/restaurants, etc. It's close to Piazza Navona & Campo de Fiori. The apartment we stayed in was very quiet and comfortable (has A/C & ceiling fans) & was very clean. Have a great time in Rome.
We stayed at Hotel Montreal in 2008. It was a really nice place and just a short walk from Termini . It was also just a short walk to the Coliseum and the roman ruins. It was so nice to just have a short walk to board the train.
another vote for Hotel Sonya. it fit our needs perfectly and was close to public transport.
check out hotel canada rome, near the termini , gets great reviews on trip advisor. we stayed there in april 2008 and would go back for sure. good luck :):)
HI Allyson For a truly central location with wonderful staff, try Hotel Roma. You can walk to everything you want to see Mike DC
oops I meant Hotel Nerva, NOT Hotel Roma Mike DC
