My husband and I will be in Italy in October for a three week driving trip, and need some advice for staying in Lucca (2 nights) and Orvieto (1 night.) Suggestions?
hazel,
In Lucca I enjoyed my stay at Hotel Rex which is only about a one minute walk from the rail station. Although it's outside the walls, it's not a difficult walk to reach the city centre. I don't remember whether they have parking, but as they're outside the walls, you shouldn't have to deal with ZTL's.
In Orvieto I'd recommend Hotel Corso which is in a good location between the Funicular and the Duomo. As I recall, Orvieto has ZTL areas so you'll likely have to park by the station and take the Funicular.
In Orvieto the friendliest place to stay if B&B Ripa Medici. In a 30 day trip to Italy this was our favorite stop.
Since you have a car, check out Casa Selita - right outside the walls. You can walk through her olive grove, go up the escalator, and be in town ! She gives you a flashlight so we even did this during the evening….
The breakfast was great and her hospitality was unparalleled !
There are a number of very nice B and B's in Orvieto, all moderately priced. We chose San'Angelo 42 on the basis of the photos of the beautiful old building and the room decor---simple rather than ornate. It was very nice!
Note that to stay in townn(up on the hill) you will probably have to leave your car parked at the station and ride the funicular up. I think this is worth it, for the opportunity to stay among the narrow streets of the old town.
I like Hotel Virgilio in Orvieto, on Piazza del Duomo.
In Lucca, B&B La Romea was fabulous - great price, excellent breakfast, friendly hosts.
In Orvieto, B&B Ripa Medici is, as mentioned above, excellent.
Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions. We have just about finalized all the hotel stays, thanks to help from you nice people. Now we just have to wait until the end of September to go!
Before you make plans for Lucca make absolutely sure you avoid Comic Con. There were literally thousands of people there which made it impossible to enjoy what seemed to be a beautiful town.
Gosh, Rich7...I had no idea about this, but checked it out and see that it will take place after we have returned home. Whew! I'm glad because I am really looking forward to seeing Lucca, having read good things about it.
