Hotel or B&B in Venice

Has anyone stayed at Hotel Al Vagon? At 80E it's about the only one in my price range in Venice so I'm wondering if it's horrible? Any recommendations for anything else at that price (or less!)?

Kate:
You can save money and enjoy Venice more if you stay in Mestre. Try Hotel Delfino in Mestre (www.hoteldelfino-mestre). My wife and I stayed in Hotel Delfino in November, 2008 and paid 124 Euros for two nights in a double room, breakfast included. The bus stop is right infront of the hotel and it takes 5 - 7 minutes to reach Venice. There is a super market next to the hotel. You can even buy the daily and weekly passes for the bus and boat right inside the hotel from the staff. Avoid the crowds in Venice and save money by staying in Mestre.

Staying in Mestre to visit Venice is like staying in Plano to visit Dallas...

You can get a good sense for a hotel on Tripadvisor. Just take the best and worst reviews with a grain of salt.

Here's my standard recommendation for a hotel in that price range.

Kate,

You might check Albergo Doni in Venice. It's listed in Rick's "Italy" book? It's not fancy, but is within VERY easy walking distance to Piazza San Marco and also to the Vaporetto stops.

They have doubles listed for Eu$90 (that includes breakfast as I recall). Would that fit your budget?

Check their website or the "Italy" book for further details.

Happy travels!

Hi Kate,

I have stayed in Mestre and the island of Venice and I totally recommend staying in Venice. It's a hassel getting a bus to the vaparetto stop and then taking the vaparetto to Venice. You waste too much time. If you stay on the island you experience so much more.

Enjoy your trip.

Kate- hotel Allogia Alla Scala was about 85 euros for a double (2 people) The location was great-Located between Academia, Rialto, and San Marco it is close to everything. I stayed there in 2003 and 2008. In 2008, I looked around to make sure it was the best deal I could find and it still was. (A few places I might have stayed at did not have a double ensuite available during the time I was there-so it is not the only great place with a good locatiion.)

Kate, in more local terms for us, staying in Mestre to visit Venice would be like staying in Renton to visit Seattle. Sure, you can do it, but what if you want to take a little nap in the middle of the day?

Just stayed in a gem in Venice. Hotel San Barbra. About 70E for a single, more for two; maybe 90E, off season. Not dirt cheap but great atmosphere and the best service by the owners mother and the manager Roberto. Loved the comp breakfast. Good location near the students area where the locals hang out, so there are great restaurants everywhere. After a long trip, they made me at home. Secret staircases to the upper rooms and a room terrace. A real find by accident.

Chris, I can't find "Hotel San Barbra" anywhere on the web. Are you sure you spelled it correctly? Do you have a website for it?

Venice is TOTALLY different after 5:00pm when the hordes of daytrippers depart the island. You're left with a peaceful scene that's truly magical.

Thank you EVERYBODY. I've checked out all your suggestions and actually have made reservations at several of them as well at Hotel Al Vagnon. I can make up my mind for sure later. Thanks for the Mestre suggestion but I do prefer to stay right in Venice. I might stay in a quieter, leafier residential neighborhood about a 20 min walk from San Marco (one of your suggestions) though. Debating about that vs. right in the center of things. If we can get another spelling for Hotel San Barbra I'll check that one out too.

Kelsey: The quiet residential neighborhood is St. Elena. B&B Venezia and Best Western St. Elena are both located there.

Hey Kate, the quiet residential neighborhood sounds good! where exactly is that? My wife and I are going to be there in march and I'm trying to book our hotel today. so far the Santa Lucia tip from above looks good, but I'd like some options!

Thanks!

Kelsey, yes, St. Elena neighborhood, and i've made a reservation at B & B Venezia. the attic room is 65 euros, the regular double room 70 E, and there is a more expensive "garden room." Roberto seems very nice & helpful by email. i don't have the website handy, but you can google it or find it on tripadvisor.com.

if you decide to stay there, will you tell me how you like it? i'll be going in april.

The website is http://www.bbvenezia.com/ I was shocked at how cheap it was. I'll be there in June, and we're renting 2 of the rooms. I really do love this area. It's SOOO different from the madness in and around San Marco.

My wife and I went for a long walk and ended up in St. Elena one afternoon. It was like walking into a different world (in a good way).

tim, you didn't feel cut off from all the things you came to see? you've almost convinced me to cancel at the other place i have reserved near san marco.

tim, i forgot to ask: did you guys stay in the attic room? would you recommend it? i'm not looking for luxury (obviously) but i don't want tacky, grungy, or dirty.

cut off...good grief NO. It's still very much a part of Venice with regular Vaporetto service almost at the front door of this place. If you've ever taken the Alilaguna from the Airport to Venice then you've passed right by it.

Also, I've not "stayed" at this B&B yet. Not until June will we be there. But I've been to Venice 5 or 6 times and only recently discovered this area.
