Ciao! We will be staying in Rome for 2 nights/3 days before we head up to a family reunion in Tuscanny. Many of the hotels recommended by Rick in his Rome book are already booked for a group of our size (4 adults and 2 5-year olds). Using Rick's book as a starting point and cross-referencing with TripAdvisor, we've narrowed our choices down to Hotel Nerva or Hotel Campo de Fiori (third choice was Smeraldo). Locations for both seem good for us as they are both in walking distance to things are kids will enjoy (the Forum, Trevi, etc).
If you have stayed in either, your thoughts? We won't be in the hotel much, I'm sure, but we do need to have a quiet place for our twins to get some rest. And hopefully it is a place that will be OK with some kid noise, especially in the morning. We will be going end of August. Thank you for your input!
I found it very frustrating to use Rick's guide books when planning accommodation for our family (with kids) trip to Italy. In the end, we booked an apartment in Rome very close to the Forum. It gave us more room than a hotel and plenty of space. vrbo.com is a good starting point if you want to consider that option.
I stayed in Campo de Fiori in 2008. Very nice, modern, quiet, great front desk, modern bathroom, fun roof top but our particular room was tiny. It is nice to stay in the historic zone especially with children as automobiles aren't allowed.
I can't tell whether the Hotel Campo de Fiori actually overlooks the Campo de' Fiori, but if it does, I would advise the other options. We recently spent 4 nights in an apartment overlooking the Campo de' Fiori and couldn't sleep as there was constant noise - with the exception of Sunday night. The location was perfect, though.
Not to hijack the thread, but does the Hotel Campo de Fiori offer free breakfast? I am wondering if this would be a better location for us than the Hotel Artemide where we are currently booked.
Melanie, Have you tried asking them for a reservation proposal and seen if it included breakfast? Or emailing them?
Nigel, I didn't look at that. But when I did just now, the price jumps up over $ 400.00 more for 1 of our nights, so I guess I'll just stay where we are!
I can't remember if breakfast was included. We much prefer not. Right on the other side is a wonderful bakery. Theyre are cafes all over for that perfect cappucino. We had no noise in our room, it was one building off the square as I recall. I absolutely love the herb and spice booth at the farmers market though. I bring home so many and they make great gifts.
My wife and I stayed at Hotel Nerva for 4 nights in late February 2012. I would certainly recommend it. The location was excellent, especially for seeing the sites of ancient Rome, and the staff was friendly and helpful. Our room (101) was comfortable and the breakfast was ample. The only negative was a very small shower but this was more than made up for by the positives.
