Hotel near Varenna-Esino train station

Hello all: We are staying in Varenna for 2 nights next May while we are between Venice and Tirano to catch the train into Switzerland. We will each have a backpack and small roller bag (5-week trip). We would like to stay near the train station and hopefully have that location be close-ish to the lake ferry. I have searched Expedia and Booking.com in Perledo with little luck. I really like the info about Il Portichetto Vezio hotel, but the very steep walk up and down (or expensive taxis) is off-putting. Are there some good options I have missed, or wiill I have to bite the bullet and use taxis either to/from the hotel or the station and the Lake Ferry. Any recommendations based on experience or direct info? Thanks for any help you can give.

Varenna is a small town and almost any hotel is within walking distance of the station. There is a hiil down from the station. Worse case scenario, you take a cab for the five minute ride to any hotel.

I stayed at the Royal Victoria and paid extra for a lake view room. Worth every penny. I spent every morning enjoying coffee on the balcony while taking in the amazing scenery.

Many years ago I stayed at the Albergo Milano. It was under different ownership then, although current reviews look good. It was an easy walk from both the train station and the ferry landing.

I agree with Frank. I stayed at Royal Victoria and paid for a lake view room with a balcony. Oh....my....word! That was worth the money for me! It was very rainy one day when I was there and honestly, I just pulled up a chair by the glass doors and read while glancing out at the lake and mountains in the rain.

I walked it from the station with my rolling carry on. I was early-70's, in fair shape...good enough to keep up with an RS tour but certainly not athletic. Once you get down the small hill from the train station it's fairly flat to the Royal Victoria on the main street.
