Hotel near train station or airport

We have a 11am flight out of Rome and are arriving there from Florence the night before. Do we stay at a hotel near the train station and take the train to the airport, or stay near the airport? And then any recommendations for a hotel? Thanks!

The airport hotels are non-descript and expensive. With an 11 AM departure you have plenty of time to take the Leonard Express or a shared shuttle to the airport. I would stay in Rome for one last night.

Thanks for the opinion. We are leaning toward the hotel near the hotel and just looking for one now.

We always stay in the Termini area. Have use Sonya and Aberdeen for longer stays (prefer Sonya) and for the one night used Contilla - one block out the side door of Termini.

Paula, I agree with Frank. With a flight at 11:00, you should have lots of time to get to Termini to board the Leonardo Express. You'll probably have to get through breakfast and be ready to leave Rome by about 08:30 though. One suggestion - you might consider buying your tickets for the Express when you arrive from Florence, since you'll be at the station anyway. That will save a bit of time on departure day, as you'll only have to validate them prior to boarding. For Hotels in that area, you might consider either Hotel Sonya or Hotel Aberdeen. Both are relatively close to Termini. Happy travels!

For years we stayed at the Hotel Massimo D'azeglio on Via Cavour. It is located about 5 blocks from Termini. However, 2years ago we discovered the nice b&b called Armonio All' Opera across the street from the Roma Opera House on Via Viminale. We will be spending 2 nights there in early August. The b&b is about 6 blocks from the station. If you buy the Roma &Piu pass you get 3 days of free transportation on Roman public transit and this includes the Leonardo Express to Fiumicino Airport. Buon viaggio,

I do think the advice about the pass including the Leonard Express is in error. The Leonard Express is a private line, not part of Rome transit, and as such is not included in any pass. PS - EDIT - Just on the official web site for the Rome Pass and Rome Pass Plus - Direct quote .........."and all connections to and from Fiumicino and Ciampino Aeroporto are not included." In other words, the Leonardo Express is not included.

Paula, you've got a typo. You wrote "We are leaning toward the hotel near the hotel." Did you mean near the airport or near the train station?

We are staying at the Seccy Hotel near the airport in Fiuminco. We wanted a good nights sleep before the long trip back home.

Frank, Oooops. Thanks for catching my error. I must have misread a previous post from RinR. I do not want to provide any incorrect info. As for the original post, she could use venere.com to find hotels/b&b's not too far from Termini. This website provides many hotel choices, pricing, map locations, and client reviews.

Since we are flying out on a Saturday morning, we want a hotel near a transportation hub either the airport we are flying out of, or the train station where we can catch the airport express. We are open to either. Sorry for the confusion.

Paula, as everyone has suggested, with an 11 AM departure you can probably stay ANYWHERE as all transportation options would be available to you! If you're headed back to the States on a US flagged airline, you would depart through Terminal 5 at FCO. Most US Airlines recommend you arrive 3 hours prior to your departure and so that would be 08:00. You can leave from anywhere in Rome by 07:00 and easily make the recommended time-frame. So you could stay near Roma Termini and ride the SITBus Shuttle , Terravision Bus Service , Leonardo Express, taxi, or private shuttle. For a list of the highest rated hotels/B&B in the Termini area (by Venere.com and Booking.com), see this post: The Best Hotels and B&B's near Roma Termini. Or you could stay in Trastevere and ride the FM1 out to the airport. It leaves every 15 minutes and takes about 25 minutes from the Roma Trastevere Train Station. Or you could stay in the Prati Area (near the Vatican) and ride the SITBus Shuttle from Piazza Cavour. For the best ranked places to stay there, see The Best Hotels and B&B's in the Prati-Vatican Area. You could also stay near any metro connection and connect at Roma Termini with the options listed above. So you see, with an 11 AM departure you can stay in-town and enjoy Rome at Night!

I seem to be going against the grain here, but we just got back from Rome and spent our last night at the Airport Hilton. It was a very nice place, breakfast included. We booked early and got a prepaid rate for about $180 for a king-size bed. They also offer a free bus toand from the heart of Rome if you get to the hotel early and want a last fling in Rome itself, as we did. That morning we too had a 11:00 flight, and a shuttle hauled us and our luggage directly to Terminal 5. We liked the good night's sleep and lack of hassle of having to transport from Rome to be at the airport by 8:00.

Here is another thought regarding booking a hotel near the train station. We will be in Rome for several days on the front end of our trip, going to Florence for a few, then returning again for this one night before leaving in the morning for the airport. Is it unwise to not book that final night in a hotel, but instead find a hotel as we explore on the front end of the trip -- perhaps even find a good deal with the last-minute booking? Or is that just foolish (we will be there mid-September)? Thanks again, all!
