hotel near train station in Rome

My husband and I have been to Rome a few times and this trip will be flying in and the next morning taking the train to Naples so we just want a decent hotel within walking distance to the station. Any thoughts? I know that the area around the station can be a bit shady. We are going in October so I am not too worried about fighting for a room during the busy season.

For just the situation you describe we use Hotel Contilla. Rooms decent, breakfast is so so.Just a block south out the side door of Termini. Laundry across the street if needed. About four blocks away is Hotel Sonya that we use the majority of the time. Much better breakfast. We like the Termini area and don't think of it as being shady. It is busy !

The area around Termini is very Cosmopolitan, it reflects the diverse character of the travelers. I lodge on the Via Marsala side of Termini exclusively. I've only been welcomed by the many vendors and merchants who depend on our safety and well being for their livelihood.

An Office at Via Milazzo 4/6 manages three hotels -- Hotel Mirage, Hotel Halifax, Bed and Breakfast Caroline Suites. Ask for a room on the indoor courtyard if you need quiet. Rooms are nice, private, clean with big ensuite bathrooms, and mattresses are among the best. All guests meet next door for a delicious big breakfast.

Check the websites before you email so you know what to ask for. I've always asked for budget price and always got it.
It takes a minute to arrive at the Office. When you arrive at Roma Termini walk to the big green neon Plus sign that marks the Farmacia inside the station, walk through the hallway that runs alongside the Farmacia to the outside, cross Via Marsala, jog right a bit to Via Milazzo, Office is a few doors from that corner.

My wife and I are taking an RS tour in June that includes Rome. RS has us staying in Hotel Sonya which is less than a 10 minute walk from Termini. It's the expected 3 stars and includes a breakfast.

Updating my post. I checked the websites I listed above and there's been changes since I was last there November 2014. The Via Milazzo 4/6 Office now manages five lodgings: add on B n B alla Basilica and B n B Galaxy.

And I didn't find my usual budget price of 30 Euro a night. Now the budget is 40 Euro a night.

Kim,

A few years ago, we stayed at Domus Aurea Hotel.

Our room was clean, comfortable and reasonably priced. The hotel staff were very helpful & nice.

Breakfast is great & served on the roof terrace.

The hotel is a 1-minute walk from Termini Station.
You can read about this hotel here: http://www.booking.com/hotel/it/domus.html

and here: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g187791-d233377-Reviews-Exe_Domus_Aurea-Rome_Lazio.html

Have a wonderful trip!

EDIT: We actually stayed at this hotel in the month of October & we got a great deal on the price!

Me too. I would stay at Domus Aurora Roma. Theirs is the only email I saved out of the many I received from my queries. They have so much to offer at such a reasonable price and with such gracious hospitality.
