First time in Rome. Going solo. Want recommended safe air conditioned hotel near train station and attractions. Not too expensive. Any suggestions appreciated.

dianesd,

Try The Beehive. It is both a hostel and a hotel. Reasonable prices, clean, great staff and owners. Cute walled garden in front and only a few blocks from Termini.

diane,

My usual favourites in the Termini area are Hotel Sonya or Hotel Aberdeen. You didn't list your price criteria, so I'm not sure whether you'd find them "too expensive". The Beehive suggested in the previous reply is a good choice, but they're very popular and often booked full. The absolute cheapest lodgings in Rome will be a Hostel, and if you'd like to consider that option, post another note. I sometimes use one near Termini and the cost is €35 in a four bed dorm. I can tolerate "communal living" for a night or two.

I have stayed at the hotel Sonya and Contila, both just a couple blocks from the Termini and a perfect location. I would recommend either one.
(breakfast is a bit better at Sonya, but also costs a bit more)
I walked all over this area day and night and felt very safe.

This past September, I stayed at the Hotel Aberdeen and liked it a lot. It was part of our RS Tour. Many years ago, I stayed at the Hotel Scott which is very close to the train station. I don't know anyone who has stayed there recently, but from their website, it still looks like a nice place to stay.

Be aware that the area near the train station can feel a little seedier late at night compared to other neighborhoods if that is a concern for you. I doubt that it is flat out unsafe (from what I understand, tourists in Rome don't have to worry too much about violent crime), but since you highlighted that you are traveling solo and want a safe place, just wanted to let you know that on the spectrum of safe feeling neighborhoods in Rome, that area isn't at the top of the list. We stayed several days up by the Borghese Gardens, which felt very safe, left Rome, then spent one night near Termini at the end of our trip to catch our airplane the next day and could tell a bit of a difference. It is convenient for sure though.

Diane,
i always stay at Hotel Mirage, or Hotel Halifax, or Bed and Breakfast Caroline, 2-star hotels, but really really nice and clean, cheap, and well-staffed with lovely people, some speak English, but even those who speak only Italian know hospitality so well you feel at home.

All are close together on Via Milazzo on the Via Marsala side of Termini, just walk to Track 1, to the big green neon Farmacia Plus sign and walk through that indoor to outdoor hallway flanking the windows of the Farmacia. Cross Via Marsala, jog right a tad to Via Milazzo, turn left, and waik to the office at 6 Via Milazzo. Breakfast is served next door, left of the office, second floor (first floor in Italy), and it is delicious!

I'm always solo, female and 70, size 2, with no problems in the area, and I walk it at all hours. I need to fall into my hotel from Termini, and I can reach these hotels in a few minutes! I've stayed in other hotels on the other side of Via Milazzo, but they are not as good.

A room on Via Marsala facing Termini is a bit noisy as the vendors drive up and unload at 4 AM! LOL! A room facing the inside courtyard gets quiet by 11 PM when restaurants finish closing up.

I have stayed there winter and summer and was always comfy and happy. Google these names for their websites. OK to write me with questions.

I recently stayed at hotel Contilia for one night before flying out. It's a basic, clean and quiet room. Somewhat institutional feel. I can't comment on the breakfast because we had to leave early for a flight. I would rather see you pay a taxi about 10€ for a short ride over to Pantheon area if staying more than one night. Getting a taxi is easy around termini. Try Hotel Smearaldo if on a tight budget. Great location. I stayed at Della Torre Argentina which is very close to Smearaldo. (DTA doesn't have breakfast, but does have mini fridge. We bought food at Despar grocery store close to Pantheon). The Campo dei Fiori area is great as is anything near Pantheon and Piazza Navona.

I am with Ken (earlier) Our preference is Hotel Sonya because my wife thinks the latte are better than Hotel Aberdeen. Both have great breakfasts. For one night just passing through Rome we use Hotel Contilla. Basic and functional and right across the street from a self laundry. Breakfast is very so so. And seedy is in the eye of the beholder. I don't find the Termini area to be any more seedy or less seedy than a lot of areas in Rome. But it is a busy area with lots of people moving about.

As some others have recommended.. The Beehive is pretty decent. I stayed twice near the Termini station once at the beehive and another time at an Airbnb apt and would recommend the location for convenience especially if you have an early flight or train to catch from Rome. The area might seem a bit overcrowded with street vendors and people...But I walked from termini to my lodging which was a few blocks from the station around 11pm and I didn't get creeped out. Have you looked at Airbnb? I had the most pleasant stay at a lovely Airbnb for under $70 per night that included breakfast and a private bath. Good luck with your search!!

I always stay at the Hotel Aberdeen. ...the neighborhood IS NOT seedy. It is located directly across from Italian Minister of defense building and the presence of security is very apparent. As a matter of fact I feel very comfortable and safe in that area. It is about three blocks from the termini and a pleasant walk to Trevi and Spanish Steps.

Enjoy your stay

We have stayed at Hotel Smeraldo near Campo Di Fiori and loved the location. Hotel was fine with very good a/c but rms quite small. Also stayed at Hotel Italia just off Via Nazionale and not far from Termini. Breakfast was fine at both places. Otherwise have rented 3 apts near Piazza Navona which is a great location.

A good friend of mine (petite, mature female) who has traveled solo all over the world gives both Hotel Domus Praetoria and Hotel Serena high marks; both near Termini. We've stayed not far from Termini as well and haven't had any issues with the area.

Maybe I should change my adjective. I think Rick called the area "gritty" in his travel guide if I remember correctly. It was the one place where we saw somebody getting robbed, and the one area where we felt a little on guard walking around late at night, but again, I don't think there is a huge risk of violent crime. It probably also depends on which area of Termini we are discussing...maybe the neighborhood of our hotel was a little different than the ones being recommended here.
