I have an early morning flight to US leaving from Linate Airport. What hotels near airport would you recommend? Take a taxi or hotel shuttle to airport?

Try Air Hotel Milano Linate. I have not stayed there but it looks great. www.airhotel.it
A local recommended it.

depending on how early your flight is you could stay in Milan near train station and take Starfly shuttle to Linate
there is a very good Starhotel Anderson directly across the street from shuttle stop
