1. If you rent a car and have an early flight out of FLR, consider that the rental offices at the airport open at 8:00 am, therefore I don't know if you can return your car the day of your departure. I always return my car in Florence (always at the city center offices) the day before my flight for that reason. But I don't know if you can drop off the car at the airport before their opening hours if your flight is before. 2. Since you are planning to spend the last trip nights (plural), I gather you intend to spend more than one night in Florence before your flight back. In that case you should probably return your car even sooner, because you won't need a car while you are in Florence (actually it's a hassle to have one). 3. The Florence airport is very close to the historical center (6 km or less than 4 miles) therefore there is no reason for you to stay near the airport. The city center is very close. A taxi will take you from downtown to the airport in 15 min. max, especially early in the morn with no traffic. The area near the airport is ugly with nothing to see or do. Stay in the city center and have fun during your last evenings in Florence. Leave your hotel 90 min. prior to flight departure and you'll have plenty of time. All you need is to be at the airport one hour prior to departure. Florence's airport is smaller than some people's homes and nearly all airplanes operating in it are smaller regional aircraft of about 100 seats (Lufthansa E90 or E95, AirFrance Avro RJ85, Swiss Avro RJ100, Alitalia Airbus A319).

Cheryl, any hints on your itinerary with the car? You can't drive it in any of the historical areas of Florence because of the restricted driving zones (ZTLs). If you plan on visiting Florence, you may have the leave the car outside of the city and take the bus or train.
