Hotel near Colosseum

I received great advice on this site about a great hotel in Munich (Hotel Uhland) which I was able to book. Now I am trying to find a hotel in Rome near the Colosseum. There are five of us (2 adults, 3 kids-16,14,4). The hotel that comes to the top of my list so far is Hotel Nerva. Any other recommendations in the 3-4 star category would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Husband and I stayed at the Hotel Lancelot when we were in Rome 4 years ago. It's family-owned, clean, safe, friendly, dinner is delicious, breakfast is astounding. Room was spacious and clean. There is an elevator.
Hotel is about a 5-min. walk from the Colosseum.
We'd stay there again if we went back.

Tammy, I've stayed in Hotel Nerva. I'd stay again. Great location and very clean, friendly hotel.

Have you tried the hotel Capo D'africa? It is close to the colosseum and always gets very good reviews.

The Hotel Nerva is the single worst hotel I have ever stayed at in Rome since 1984. It was dark, narrow and old. The single room had three 25 watt lightbulbs, the shower was the size of a phone booth and there wasn't enough room for me and my suitcase at the same time. I couldn't put on makeup in the bathroom because it was too dark.

There are many three star hotels in Rome in the vicinity of E125 (May 2010 prices) per night to choose from. I am shocked at the positive reviews this hotel has received and would never recommend it to anyone I know.

I can only imagine that anyone who stayed here and liked it had no other hotel experiences in Rome to compare it to.

The only positive things I can say are that it was quiet, it was near the Colisseum and the Forum and the breakfast was good. The bed was moderately comfortable but the pillow was horrible. None of this made up for the 1950s ambiance and dingy decor.

I've been to Rome several times and usually stay in the Piazza Navona area. I've also stayed near Piazza del Repubblica. However, this time we're bringing a group and I just happened upon the Hotel Napoleon near the Colosseum. It gets really good reviews on TripAdvisor, the location has a metro stop right at the front door, big included breakfast, clean, exceptionally friendly staff, and I was able to even bargain with them on the price. We're staying in June for 2 nights with 14 people in 5 rooms for 1500 Euro. They were also able to arrange roundtrip airport transportation for my group for less than the Rome Shuttle service that I usually use...and WAY less than the Leonardo Express.

I also found a great little Trattoria just around the corner from the hotel and the hotel staff went out of their way to find the exact location, phone number, and called and made reservations for us.

This will be my first time staying near the Colosseum, and I'm glad I found the Napoleon.

Tammy, We stayed at the Hotel Lancelot on our first trip to Rome and really enjoyed the hotel. The staff was friendly & went out of their way to help me find a replacement curling iron. The room was bright and clean, the bathroom was small, but not tiny.
I loved walking by the Colosseum at night on the way back to the hotel, and the neighborhood was quiet, but with quite a few restaurants. The owner, Mrs. Kahn, gave us a recommendation to a restaurant that we go back to every time we go to Rome!

Last Sept we stayed at the Hotel Nerva on our 3rd trip to Rome and were in a room that was actually behind the hotel. We had a separate entrance. The room was small and bathroom was very small, but spotless. The hotel staff were exceptionally friendly, and they arranged a cab for us on the morning of departure at a reasonable rate. It was there waiting for us when we came downstairs.
The owners wife & another lady did the breakfast and the cappacino was excellent. They were very friendly
and breakfast was good.
Obviously, we didn't stay in the same room that Karen did so we had a different experience.

Have you thought of renting an apartment?
Whatever you decide, have a great trip!

We just returned from several days in Rome and stayed at the Hotel Montreal. It's a 10-15 minute walk from the Colosseum, and 1 block from a metro stop.

It may not fit in the 3-4 star category (maybe 2-3 stars?), but it was convenient and offered breakfast and a helpful front desk staff.

We wanted a comfortable hotel for our first night in Europe and chose Hotel Capo D'Africa which, if I remember correctly, is across the street the Lancelot. The hotel was very nice--large room, nice breakfast, pleasant staff--but out of our budget for the full 5 nights of our stay (we stayed in a convent for the rest of the stay). I liked the area alot--would recommend the hotel if it is within your budget.

We stayed at Hotel Montreal in 2008 at found it to be a really nice place to stay. It was only a 10-15 minute walk from the colosseum which was nice. It was also only a few minutes from the main train station.

Just stayed at Hotel nerva and recommend it. Location is unbeatable-walk out onto the Forum. Great staff, clean room. We read about small showers and asked for room with a larger one and got room that backed onto private area.

Staff has great recommendations(we liked Wanted as an everyday kind of restaurant-very accommodating

Nerva is definitely worth of consideration. It is smallish-but most older hotels are.

Hi Tammy, try Nicolas Inn. It's a 5 minute walk to the Coliseum and 1 stop from Termini. I booked to stay there in October and it's gotten rave reviews here on RS and on TripAdvisor. They answer your emails promptly and it's a 4 room B & B owned by an American and I believe, her French husband. You get a discount if you show your RS book.
