We're planning to visit Cinque Terra March 24. We'll be traveling with a car from Milan the night before. We'll stay just one day, then moving on to Pisa, Florence and the Tuscany region. Parking in and near Cinque Terre is difficult. We're thinking it might be easiest to stay at a hotel near Cinque Terre that has easy parking, then take train to Cinque Terre. Do you think this is a good idea? What suggestions do you have for hotel location for the night of March 23?
You won’t need or want a car in Pisa or Florence
Why not just take trains and pick up car as you leave Florence?
“Tuscany” is only place you’ll want a car
This is part of a week long tour of northern Italy with my family, thus the car.
I would try to stay 2 nights--a lot of driving to just stay there one day. Park at the top of the hill in Monterossa al Mare. Find a hotel in town. Try Hotel Villa Steno if you want parking on site.
We've usually visited the CT by train but did one day trip by car from Lucca. We were there in mid March and the tourist season was barely started, but that was 15 years ago. We parked in public parking on the beach in Monterrosa without any difficulty. I'm not sure if any hotels have parking.
I remember parking above Vernazza once and taking a shuttle down to our hotel. That trip we got pushed into a stone wall by a box truck! After that experience I decided only to train in if it was at all busy. I think if I go back I will try one of the nearby towns, maybe Levanto.
Ruth, thank you for sharing your experience. Helpful. Sorry to hear about your car accident.
One attractive solution is to stay in Levanto which has more hotels and easier parking. It's a short train ride to the Cinque Terre, yet is charming in its own right. It also has a nice beach and is hiking distance to Monterosso.
