Rick has this hotel listed in Rome 2008 guidebook and on this website travelers give it positive reviews, but when I checked on Tripadvisor the reviews varied widely from those who loved it to those to detested it. Can anyone who has stayed there comment on their experience? They have a great promotion for January, 69 euros for a double room.
I think you will find mixed reviews with virtually every budget hotel in the termini area. I stayed in this hotel about 10 years ago and I understand that it has been updated since then so I cannot comment on the rooms now. But 69 Euros is a good price. I've stayed in 3 different hotels in the termini area in the past couple of years and most have been in the 100 Euro price range for a single. Of the 3 I stayed in, I thought Hotel Sonya was the nicest but can't compare that with Nardizzi Americana since it has been so long. The location of Nardizzi Americana is good. You can easily walk to the train station. There are a number of buses that run down via Nazionale (via Firenze is just off this road) so it is very easy to get to the center of Rome.
69 euros is a great deal. If Rick still lists it in his book, then it's probably a good bet. I like using the Tripadvisor reviews as well, but I consider the nature of the negative comments (e.g., if they comment on noise, and it's a centrally located hotel likely to be noisy, then I figure they had the wrong expectations about the hotel in the first place). I too have stayed at Hotel Sonya and enjoyed it.
We stayed there 12 months ago - 5n, without issue. It was clean and comfortable. The staff were helpful enough. The breakfast had mixed responses from my family, but I being the more easy to satisfy was quite happy with what was there. My main comment about breakfast would be get there earlier rather than later, as once it was near the end items didn't get replaced, but the days we were there early it was okay. We arrived by train and it was an easy walk to and from the termini. We mostly walked everywhere, and found the location convenient enough.
We also got a great deal (their "Overbooking Special") last year at Christmas time. We found nothing to complain about. Our room was very pretty, everything was clean and the location was extremely convenient. The breakfast was not gourmet, but very acceptable, with unlimited amounts to satisfy hungry teens. The price was so good that I was almost concerned but my family found it to be a fabulously great deal in a very expensive city. I'm sure you could pay two or three times that amount and get a fancier experience, but it's a wonderful bargain if you're on a budget. I have recommended it often. With TripAdvisor reviews, the pattern I've observed is glowing reviews for extremely expensive places and more critical remarks for lower priced places. It's true to a degree that you get what you pay for,but I think The Nardizzi gives you an exceptional value for the money.
I stayed at the Hotel Nardizzi a month ago and found it to be very pleasant for the price. The room was very nice and the breakfast was exactly on par with a budget hotel- pastries, cereal, juice and coffee.
I will stay there again when I return next year. You cannot beat the location- within walking distance of pretty much everything and close to the train station.
I have stayed there twice (over the past 2 years) and will stay there again. Great location (easy walk from the train station, and walkable to the sights), friendly staff, clean rooms, fair price. What more do you need :-)
BTW they sell bottles of wine at very affordable prices that you can drink on the veranda near the elevator.
I agree with what Terry says - I think some people have unrealistic expectations about budget hotels (the kind of places I usually stay in BTW). If the complaint is small rooms or older furniture, well I think that is to be expected. Budget places should have friendly staff but I don't think you can expect concierge-level services - staff is expensive remember. Now dirty is unacceptable, but 69E is a great price and you should be realistic - just learn to read between the lines a bit.
Can you please tell me if anyone has NOT had success with the "Overbooking Rate" and was bumped to another property? thanks!
If you do searches (using the box in the upper right corner), you'll find that many people were bumped from the overbooking special.
What I did when considering this option for late November last year was to email them direct and ask if they had availability for my dates. When they replied that they were booked already, I knew not to bother with the special.
We ended up staying at the Hotel Raffaello, which we were very happy with - great breakfast!!!
