Hotel Nardizzi Americana in Rome

The Rick Steves' Italy 2011 tour book recommends this hotel near the main train station in Rome. TripAdvisor comments on this hotel are not very good at all???? My question is who do I believe? Can anyone provide feedback on this hotel? All I am looking for is a room like the one listed on the hotels website without the problems enumerated on TripAdvisor. Thank you to any that reply

My husband and I stayed there with a group of friends two years ago and really have nothing negative to say except that when we arrived the elevator was not working and we had to walk up 4 flights of stairs. (Whew) I will say that two people in our group lost their luggage at Fiumicino airport and Sammy (works behind the desk) took both ladies to the airport on his off time and helped them track down their luggage. Needless to say we were very amazed at his generosity. OH, and the elevator was fixed by the time we had to go down.

You might try sending RS Travel Desk that same e-mail and ask if they have any plans to change their recommendation. No assurance they will answer you inquiry but it can not hurt. I go to Europe every summer and use whatever RS Guide Book is for that region and have never been disappointed.
After your posting, I will now be checking out TA in the future just to make sure.

Martha and Charlie, Thank you for your responses. Martha I am happy to hear that your experience was a good one. Charlie, at the very least they can research the issue and let us all know what they determine. Regards, Tony

While I don't ignore the negative reviews on Trip Advisor, I think that some are posted by people who blame the hotel for any inconvenience they suffer or who assume they're going to be staying in American style hotels. I've never had a bad experience with an RS recommended hotel or restaurant. I have read negative reviews on TA on hotels I've stayed at that that I thought were fine. One in particular was for a small hotel in London. The complaint was about the size of the towels and the frequency of changing them. The poster expected an abundance of thick American towels changed daily which is just not practical for a small hotel since the cost of commercial laundry in London is exhorbitant. Give me a towel changed every 2 days and a rate of under $100!

Teena, Thank You for your response. I believe that when in Rome you do as the Romans do. Europe is not America and that is the main reason I am going. Tony

Seems to be lots of 'bathroom drain odors', typical of most older European hotels. Also, the elevator thing...The wifi is less than hoped for...sad breakfast (it's Italy, after all)...problems with shower water getting everywhere... A troubling comment about a hidden camera attached to the front of the TV, pointed at the bed...the guest covered it up; if it was truly a camera (and not simply a blinking light), I'd have rippped it off, gone downstairs with it AND my luggage, and stuck it somewhere I can't mention HERE. Personally, I'd keep looking...but for one night, maybe if the price is REALLY right...
