Hotel La Tonnarella in Sorrento, Italy

We have rooms booked at Hotel La Tonnarella in Sorrento for September 2012. However, when I read the reviews on TripAdvisor I am hesitant to keep them. Would like feedback from anyone who has stayed there recently. Thank you.

Kevin, I've never stayed at La Tonnarella, but have dined there. Most of the reviews on Trip Advisor seemed quite favourable. Could you be more specific on which ones you're concerned with? I have stayed at Hotel Desiree which is right next to La Tonnarella (they share a driveway and beach), and was very pleased with everything there. The accommodations at Desiree were more "basic", but everything was clean and the staff were wonderful! They have a rooftop terrace and it's great to sit there on a warm afternoon and enjoy a glass of Vino while enjoying the sunshine and the view. You might also have a look at Settimo Cielo which is closer to town than the other two Hotels, along the same road. Happy travels!

Hi Ken, You gave me some nice advice about Hotel Il Nido, but I am still concerned because it is not Rick recommended. Of the hotels Desiree, Tanarell (I forget the exact name), Settimo Cielo and Hotel Il Nido, which one would you recommend? I am looking for mid range. Il Nido is giving me a special on a Superior Double room for two nights at the great price of 220 Euros for both nights. From the photos, it seems really nice. I don't know why it's bothering me so much that it is not Rick Steves recommended. I feel like if Rick doesn't recommend it, then there must be something wrong with it, and yet, the reviews are the best I have seen!

@Ruth, I wouldn't be too concerned about the fact that Il Nido isn't listed in the RS Guidebook. There could be a number of reasons why it's not listed. To begin with, I doubt that Rick is able to check out every Hotel in each town, so he tends to list a reasonable variety of reliable places for his readers to choose from. Il Nido looks like an excellent Hotel, and as you noted the reviews are outstanding. As long as you don't mind the fact that it's not located right in the centre of town, I'm sure you would be very comfortable there. I'd have no hesitation at all in staying there, especially if the Hotel provided me with a room upgrade.

I booked a room there based on the recommendation of the Rick Steve's site. However, the hotel currently has a two star rating on the TripAdvisor site and is ranked 64 out of 100 hotels in Sorrento. The most recent reviews have stated difficulties in working with staff and dicey room conditions. I would like to hear from someone who has actually stayed there very recently as this is likely to be our only trip to Italy.

Hi Kevin, Lewiston! I stayed in Lewiston when I graduated from WSU and went there for my graduation in 2010. The drive from the "Westside" (Seattle) to the "Eastside" is quite beautiful! This will be my first trip to Europe and Italy in particular. I highly value Rick Steve's recommendations. However, I found (not currently Rick recommended, but was at one time) what seems to be a very lovely hotel called, "Il Nido" (not to be confused with the Il Nido in Amalfi). It has free shuttle service to town, many rooms with balconies, and a great dinner menu. In the photos it really looks nice. The city bus (SETA) that goes to the coast stops right in front of the hotel. The reviews are excellent. On Trip Advisor it is ranked #7 of the hotels in Sorrento. On Booking.com it has an excellent rating, 8.9. Ruth
