Hotel/Inn recommendations in Southern Tuscany-Northern Umbria en route to Rome

We leave in about 2 weeks for Italy! After a rest & sightsee stop in Milan, we will pick up a rental car on 12Apr, a.m. and end up at Borgo di Cortefreda in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa by end of day. En route, we plan to stop in Pisa to visit the Piazza dei Miracoli. Originally we were spending 4 nights in Tavarnelle. I plan to now reduce that stay to 2 nights, with the 3rd night somewhere near Orvieto and the 4th night added to our current 2 night stay in Rome. I'd rather overnight near/in Orvieto in order to have time to see sights in that area, and not have to drive north to Tavarnelle each night, before driving to Rome to drop off the rental by 7pm. (We board a cruise on Sat, 18Apr and disembark in Venice 25Apr. We will see Florence on that end of the trip).

May I get your recommendations for comfortable lodging in the area around or in Orvieto?

I might also switch the pick up location of the rental car to the Pisa Airport and take the train from Milan to Pisa. I need to weight the pros and cons of driving to Pisa vs. taking the train. Not sure what type of hassle it would be to have to stow bags, get to the basilica and tower then get to the airport to get the car.

Thanks to all for your recommendations and thoughts!

Pisa Centrale station has luggage storage, check opening/closing times. Be sure to stop at the Camposanto (Cemetary), Duomo and Baptistry.

Orvieto is a beautiful place to stay. I have stayed at Hotel Duomo, around the corner from the Duomo. Hotel Virgilio is right on the Duomo piazza.

I would turn the car in when I get to Orvieto, take the funivia and minibus to Piazza del Duomo for either of these hotels (another minibus takes a longer route through the city if you stay elsewhere). Same ticket is valid for funivia and bus.

Then take the train to Roma.

Buon viaggio!

Thank you Zoe,
I will check those hotels and perhaps consider dropping car in Orvieto. Originally the rate was more reasonable with the drop in Rome due to the number of days but I've found a different program which isn't impacted by the days.
