So far I have emailed 3 or 4 different hotels in Venice and have not heard back from them. Is there some special way I need to communicate my interest to the Venetians? I was able to book all the other cities I want to stay including Rome, Pienza and even Cinque Terre just through email. Is a non-response just a way of indicating that they are booked? Most of the ones I emailed the email addresses came straight out of RS 2011 travel guide and then I also requested availability from two of the hotels' websites.
I would keep trying. I had a hotel in Paris do the same thing and when I called they said they were unable to fufill my request, therefore didn't bother. I stayed at Hotel San Barnaba which I would recommend. I chose this one over a RS listing, better location to transportation.
I tend to prefer hotels, in Venice and elsewhere, where I can check availability on-line. After I've confirmed there's availability for my dates, I might email the hotel with additional questions. I've never had a hotel, in Vence or elsewhere, not respond to my emails, unless there's a problem with emails. (I have had problems with comcast.net emails in the past.) So that could be it. Or they might be booked and not responding.
Hi i had no trouble after checking reviews on Trip Advisor. I decided on Hotel Bucitoro not right in loud touristy area but right on canal with amazing views. Good luck We go in July
I stayed at Hotel Bartolomeo (S.Marco-Rialto 5494 - 30124 Venezia) the location was perfect, the bathroom was modern and nice, a double bed and it had a quaint view of the little empty street below. It's only bad points were I had 3 flights of stairs to climb and the breakfast was not good. and it doesn't use IBOOKING. DO NOT BOOK ANY HOTEL USING IBOOKING. This is a hotel booking engine that many hotels use. It is not secure, I used 2 different cards to book my Italy hotels and they both got "compromised" with European charges and I had to get 2 new cards. More tips here

Did you check you email spam folder? Sometimes emails from Italy end up there. If that isn't the problem, the hotels are likely booked. Many of the ones listed in Rick's guidebook book up more than 6 months in advance.
We have made reservations for several nights in Venice in May and used Booking.com with good success. If you check the monastery option you might find reasonable rates (at least reasonable for Venice. Kent
We stayed at a nice B&B - Al Campaniel, near San Toma stop, I thought good rates, lovely breakfast, chocolate shop across the alley.
