I am reseeding the original question to correct selling errors that the system would not let me edit. We landing in Milan May3 and taking train to Lake Como to stay for two nights. I am assuming that we, (my wife adult daughter and I) will have to take a train to Milan central train station and then onto Varenna. We are looking for recommendations for a hotel.
Do you have the RS Italy book? It's loaded with lodging recommendations for all price ranges. We have no idea what your price range is. Happy travels.
Yes I do have the guidebook but I am looking for some personal experiences. My budget is secondary to finding a clean enjoyable hotel.
Hi Marc. There are lots of threads here about Varenna hotels. Use the search feature to find. As I recall, the one by the ferry landing has had mixed reviews, but most others are well liked or raved about. If still questions after your search, come back and ask. Enjoy your trip!
Marc, For travel to Varenna, you will have to travel from Malpensa to Milano Centrale. You can use either the Malpensa Express (operated by TreNord as I recall), which makes the trip in about 55 minutes. You could also use the Malpensa Shuttle (Bus) which also makes the trip in about an hour (depending on traffic). The Shuttle stops at the side of the station. Once you arrive at Milano Centrale, you'll transfer to a Regionale for the trip to Varenna-Esino. DON'T forget to validate your tickets prior to boarding the train. As I recall, there are departures about every two hours. The trip will take 1H:03M. You'll go through a tunnel just prior to arrival, so be ready to disembark promptly as the train doesn't stop for long! Depending on which Hotel you choose, you should be able to walk. However, after a long international flight, then the train ride and hauling luggage, I'd probably use a Taxi. There should be at least one at the station. If you need to buy rail tickets for your return journey and the Kiosks at the station aren't working, there's a very helpful travel agency just below the station in Varenna. A few comments on Hotels.... > Albergo Milano (VERY popular, but be sure to book early) > Hotel Royal Victoria (right in the main piazza, very nice) > Eremo Gaudio (located high on the hill, but great views) > Villa Cipressi (located in a beautiful Villa) > Albergo Olivedo (an older hotel right by the Ferry docks - I've found it very comfortable with good food in the restaurant - they also operate another facility next door) That should provide you with a few choices to consider. Happy travels!
Last summer we stayed at the Hotel Olivedo in Varenna and it was a very nice property. It is located right on the lake just at the ferry dock. We enjoyed our time there, but the owner, Laura, takes a bit of getting used to be around. Also, there is not an elevator and we were not required to take dinner at the hotel. Buon viaggio,
We stayed at The Orange House. it is a 2 room B&B and we liked it very much. It is very reasonably priced. The upstairs room with ensuite bath is large and I believe they can bring in an extra bed. If you don't want to share a room with your adult daughter you could rent both rooms and have the entire place to yourself. The owners live off site.
I want to thank everyone for their generosity in sharing their experiences. This has to be one of the best travel tools going.
Posted on your other posting as well. We stayed at the Eremo Gaudio last August and loved the place...amazing views!!!
I guess I will "pile on" about Albergo Milano. Also I will note that in our opinion (mine and hubby's) there is no comparison between that and Hotel Olivedo, which is seet back from the water down by the busy ferry dock, and lacks the dining terrace over the water that makes Alb. Milano so special.
