We are doing the Rick Steves South Italy Tour starting Monday, April 24, 2023. We wanted to take Rick's advice and come in a day early to reduce the jet lag, but the tour hotel, Hotel San Francesco on Via Jacopa de’ Settesoli, is booked for Sunday, April 23. Any recommendation for where (preferably nearby) we might stay for that one night before moving to Hotel San Francesco on Monday?

I like the Hotel,San Francesco also. I stayed there this summer. If they are booked, try the Relais Le Clarisse. It’s nice, albeit more expensive. I stayed there in the past. Unfortunately you’ve chosen to stay in Rome in the busiest time of the year. April 25 is a national holiday and so is May 1, so the last week of April is always super busy.

We had the same issue with our RS Southern Italy and ended up at Residenza San Calisto. We had actually added 2 days before the tour started, so we had extended time in Trastevere and loved it. We liked the location and it was surprisingly quiet, even though our room was on the street, which is actually more like an alley. One of the things we really enjoyed was being in the thick of Trastevere, with its village vibe, but then retreating to the quieter hotel area. The day the tour started we walked our bags to the San Francesco.
