Hotel in Trastavere

My mom and I will be in Rome from March 6 to March 13, and we have a reservation at the Santa Maria in Trastavere, based on reading we've done. But a couple of people I know who've been to Rome have told me that the neighborhood is too out-of-the-way and that we will find it inconvenient. Does anyone have an opinion about this?

I haven't stayed in Trastevere, but I have visited it. Trastevere, as its name implies, is across the river from the 'main core' of Rome. That means you will be a bit further from the Colosseum, Borghese, Pantheon, etc. than if you stayed in a more centralized area.

Whether or not this is an issue depends on you. Is it way out in the sticks? Not really. But it isn't right in the thick of things either.

The typical tourist zone of Rome is relatively compact compared to American cities. A good walker can get across the city in probably an hour. If your mom is older and you need to rely on public transportation, keep in mind that Trastevere is served well by bus, but not metro (subway).

For me, Trastevere is definitely a place I would consider staying on my next Rome visit. It's a quaint little neighborhood and I prefer having a quiet location to come back to at night. I think you would not find it especially inconvenient unless you plan to make extensive use of the metro. If that's the case, but you still want to be in a quieter area, look around the Vatican. It's also a bit further on the edges than, say, the Pantheon area, and therefore quieter at night, but it's also on the metro line.

Wrong-wrong-wrong! It is a very yeasty area and not that far from the center. A good 30 minute walk will get you anywhere--plus the area has some of the best and cheapest bistros in the city! Enjoy!

I personaly prefer the Trastevere area to any other as a home base. It is a quiet neighborhood, and most of the old section is an easy walk, or you can get to the river and catch buses to the Vatican or the Termini area.

You have been misinformed as to the location of Trastevere. It is definitely not out of the way or in the "sticks". Trastevere is a wonderful neighborhood with many, many restaurants and a vibrant nightlife. I have never felt uneasy walking there at night. It is located just across the Tiber River from the ancient sites, the Victor Emmanuelle monument, Jewish Ghetto, etc... My favorite place to stay there is the "Arco del Lauro", located within close proximity to the Isola Tiburina and an easy walk to the ancient sites.

The #8 Tram that runs through Trastevere will take you on a very brief ride to the historic center and drop you off just a few blocks away from the Pantheon and the Piazza Navona.

Also, you can use Google Earth to do your own research if you wonder where your hotel is in relation to key sites. We stayed in Trastevere the last time we were in Rome and loved it. However, if this is your first time in Rome, you might prefer the Campo dei Fiori / Pantheon area, since it's more central to the major sites.

You don't say how old your mom is. Do you have concerns about walking a lot?

We were in Rome in 2008 and spent an afternoon wandering around Trastevere and fell in love with its authenticity. We going back this May and we're going to stay in Trastevere at the Arco Del Lauro (John mentions it in an earlier post). We decided to this because Rome is very walkable and that's the best way to experience it. The Arco Del Lauro is near two bridges, one crosses the little island in the Tibur and drops you a short distance from the all the historic center sights. Another bridge crosses right over to the Roman Forum and Colosseum. I'm not sure about the walkability of this bridge though. Anyone? Then, going in the other direction on the Trastevere side of the Tibur you can walk to the Vatican. If you and your mom are walkers . . . do it!! Do it!! Do it!!

You're getting a lot of votes for Trastavere, and that's for good reason. Great restaurants, delightful streets to explore, good shops, and on Saturday nights great entertainment in the Piazza del Santa Maria. If you are in good walking shape, you can walk anywhere from there (do have good walking shoes). The neignborhood tends to attract a younger crowd in the evenings. Just one caveat--you may enjoy it so much you will just want to hang out there much of the time!

Because it is so popular with a younger crowd, parts of Trastevere can get kind of rowdy at night, especially on the piazzas and along the main drags. Be sure to find out if your room has a window onto a piazza and decide how you feel about that. Many hotels have rooms that don't open onto piazzas, but rather onto inner courtyards. Although it's less likely to be rowdy in March, I would think.

just stayed there in July. The area was great! not out of the way at all. Took the bus everywhere. And the staff was wonderful. The breakfast was a great start to the day but, we never made it to the afternoon snack. Enjoying Rome too much. Be sure to sit in the piazza and enjoy some Gelato while people watching.
Have a wonderful time!
